Friday, Dec. 12, 1930

Today is Emil Brand’s birthday.  Bertille baked honey cookies this morning.  This afternoon we all went up in the woods.  I seen in the Waterloo Times that George Wiegand of Hecker Ills., has a new Plymouth Coupe.  Hugo Schroeder of St. Louis was in a accident Tuesday evening a machine collided with him on the Hard Road by Coxeyvile.  Leona baked some pinwheel cookies this afternoon for Christmas.  Herman Geodelle & Ray Crook had a accident too Tuesday evening.  The machines were both damaged & Crook had a cut in his hand.  A baby girl was born to Mr. & Mrs. Nick Meuth on Dec. 2 & a baby girl was born to Mr. & Mrs. Hy. Brinkman sponsor were Mr. & Mrs. George Welzbacher.  Its name is Sylveria[?] Elizabeth it was baptized in Waterloo Sunday.  In Red Bud it is reported have 30 cases of scarlet fever & it also is spreading out in the country now, the way the paper says.  The Co. commissions to 3 surveys for the hard road to Hecker & sent them up to Springfield.  One was the old road & thru Lord’s Corner down to Athens, & one north, & another still further north, straight east from Waterloo.

Saturday, Nov. 22, 1930

Papa went to Waterloo this afternoon to get his watch fixed.  Henry & Leona went to Belleville this afternoon & got the kids new shoes.  The kids stayed here.  The Democrat candidates gave a free dance & lunch in the Odd Fellow’s Hall tonight, Henry & Leona went there, it was so crowded in the basement & also on the second floor.  Hugo Radan furnished the latest music & Crooks Ramblers the old time music.  We were out at George Boll’s celebrating Karl’s 20 birthday.  Cake, Lemonade, Beer, wine, sandwiches were the refreshments served.  Papa bought 2 little pigs this afternoon from a man by Burksville.  He also brought a little kitten along too.

Wednesday, Nov. 19, 1930

Papa went to Waterloo again this morning.  Wm. Ganley was here this morning.  Papa (had dinner out there too) went to Henry’s first and helped him get his pig pen fixed so when the man comes with pigs, so it was ready.  He got the mule this morning & brought Henry the pigs.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up this evening & brought a 40 lb. watermelon along up to eat, so I called Leona & told them to come up too, so they did but still we couldn’t eat it all.  Eggs are .32¢.

Saturday, Nov. 15, 1930

Rosalia went to clean the church this morn. on Aunt Mary’s place.  Papa went down to Red Bud & got some desks for the Sister.  Leona was up & got the milk check and paid $49.00.  She also brought some bones along up too.  Victor Eichenseer was down & fixed our pump.  Steve Rennecker was also over.  The coffee man was around this afternoon, but we didn’t take any.  Mr. Stadliman was around selling apples, he came here too, but we didn’t take none.  Mr. Mike Armstutz was here & brought us a load of corn.  Today is Louise Birkner’s birthday.

Thursday, Nov. 13, 1930

Papa went up in the woods this morning & Rosalia went out to Henry’s to help Leona fry down beef.  She took 4 gal. lard along.  Tonight is Bluey (?) in the church Hall & 100 turkeys & geese given away as prizes.  We were there.  Rosalia got a turkey tom.  Lester Gregson & Mr. Williams the feed man from E. St. Louis, was here this afternoon, we ordered a sack of feed.  Lester is going to bring it tomorrow night.

Tuesday, Nov. 4, 1930

Today is Election.  Papa went out in the woods this morning, him and Uncle Joe & Eddy Meuth cut a tree down with a bee hive in it.  Then they went up to Meuth’s again, they had a whole tub full.  So Papa called up & said Rosalia should come out & fix the honey out there so she went.  They said for half it would make about 3 or 4 gals.  Meuths are going to get half of it.  Henry is plowing here today.  Leona & the kids came up just before dinner, they were all here for dinner.  Papa had dinner out at Meuths today.  Henry and Papa went up to vote.  Bertille was at church this morning.  Rosalia was out at Meuth’s for supper.  They didn’t have enough jars to put the honey in so in the evening Papa & Bertille drove out there too & took a 2 gal. jar along.  It made about 12 gals. altogether, we got 5 1/2 gals.  John Wittenauer’s have a little girl since Sunday afternoon.

Tuesday, Oct. 28, 1930

Henry started plowing up here today.  Leona came up too and the kids, they were all here for dinner.  We washed this morning.  Rosalia & Bertille went to the Euchre in Kammler’s Hall this evening, but didn’t win anything.  Rosalia had 6 points & Bertille 7, but the 8’s didn’t all get prizes, there wasn’t enough.  Aunt Mary got a sauce pan she had 10 points.

Monday, Oct. 27, 1930

Leona came up this morning after the kids.  It rained a little this morning.  This afternoon Mrs. Lutz is getting buried.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary was here this afternoon & then Rosalia & Bertille went along with them to Mrs. Lutz funeral.  The people couldn’t all get in church it was so large a funeral we got as far as the steeple.  We rode along out to the cemetery with Uncle Fred & rode back with Joe Gregson’s.  There was a man around this morning selling coffee, and with so many checks you could win something either a clock or dishes, waterless cooker, so we ordered 2 lbs. coffee and dishes.  Eggs today are .28¢.  Rosalia was up town this morning and got some feed.  Mrs. Rausch is awful sick at present.

Sunday, Oct. 26, 1930

Today is shooting matches all over again, Ambrose Doyle, Philip Meuth, George Rickert.  Henry & family were all here for dinner today.  Little after dinner they went home.  In the evening Henry & Leona brought Bobby & Floyd here to stay with us all night, while they went to New Athens to play music.

Tuesday, Oct. 21, 1930

We canned beets & sauerkraut today.  Leona & the kids were up this afternoon, but they didn’t get off of the machine, she came up to get some things from the store.  It is nice & warm again this afternoon.  Ed Meng was over tonight and wanted to know if he could get the lime dust spreader tomorrow.  In Belleville everybody is donating for the jobless.
