Rained a little. Cooking catsup etc. Pap hauling a load rock for drive way. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up, she helped clean dishes for the pinic [sic] on the 10. next week; he cut lawn here. Mr. Geo. Weinhoff of Waterloo was married to Weilbacher at Millsdadt [sic – Millstadt] Miss Elnora – bridesmaid & Milton Weilbacher best man. Wm. Weber & Mary Qurin of Smithton married at St. Therasa [sic – Theresa] at Belleville, priest house, attendanted [sic] by brother & sister. she was formerly at Ruma Convent to be a nun till yr. ago, going to live at Smithton were he runs service Station there. Leo & family got plow share. Received our books from Fr. Spors, there is 41 prizes for 10 [cents] – 3 – 25 [cents]. got 2 books, 1 is filled.

Thursday, Aug. 4, 1938

Canned 21 qts. peaches. Laut & Schneider hulling clover seed here. Awful hot today. Cut tomatoes for catsup & peach preserves.

Wednesday, Aug. 3, 1938

Beautiful day, hot. Pap went in woods to get load rock for to put in road. Went to Paderborn pinic [sic] at 5. nice crowd this eve; musci [sic] by Schoenborns. Bert [Bertille] won $2.85 playing bluey. $10. went to Belleville – $5. to Willie Kreher & Ed. got some thing also.

Tuesday, Aug. 2, 1938

Washed, ironed. Billy’s [Willis] 5 yr. birthday today. Hy. Armstutz came got coop chickens old hens we shipped 24. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary over here. Oscar Goedelle was buried yesterday at Waterloo. We went out to Henry’s Billy’s birthday; had cake & cherry juice. Cleveland’s, Geodelle’s, Orlets families were present, music & singing.

Monday, August 1, 1938

Cloudy. Canned tomatoes & peaches, cooked catsup & preserves. Emil plowed a field here & did other odd jobs; this afternoon, had lunch & supper here. This eve. Emil & Bert [Bertille] went to Waterloo to see Smith’s players show, it was fine, & big crowd. Leo & family were down to get his plow share, but it isn’t sharpened yet.

Sunday, July 31, 1938

Went to mass. Leo & family & Birkner’s were here for dinner. Uncle [Fred] went home got a watermelon, ate it before dinner. All went to Smithton to parade at 1:30 it was beautiful. nice crowd; but tonite rain, boy heavy rain spoiled it again. A man from Clinton Co. got the V.8. Ford. & 2 yr. old from Smithton the bicycle don’t know who got lawn mower; rained heavy north.

Saturday, July 30, 1938

Pap got crushing done. Emil got the truck went out to Henry’s hulling sweet clover for Emil Ganley now. Bert [Bertille] went to Levi Gregsons to get Emil, there telephone doesn’t report. Cloudy all day. Smithton has home coming, parade 6:15. raffling out a lawn mower, byicile [sic – bicycle]. Ford Coach – for 25 [cents]. Went to Smithton, but parade was posponed [sic] till tomorrow on account of rain, streets would be to muddy, dance & pinic [sic] was held.

Friday, July 29, 1938

Cloudy. We caught the hens, cut wings & cooped up 26 for sale next Tues. to ship. Berniece came over yesterday selling chances for there pinic [sic] on Aug. 14. on quilt & bed spread. we took 3 tixs. We went to Leo’s took lawn mower along, had supper there.

Had spring chicken dinner. Henry came this afternoon went to meeting at Kammler’s again this afternoon. Was at Waterloo this morn. got his check $152. & brought paps along $21.75. 1937 Agr. Conservation check. Henry does pretty good by signing up. We went to Smithton to bank; went to Rennkers awhile this eve.

Wednesday, July 27, 1938

Henry & Rob. came got tractor, going to cut for Emil Ganley. Emil Brand helped went out with the Whip. got out about 10 bus. this afternoon. Bert [Bertille] went to church funeral of Nic Cortner 61 yrs. Fr. had very nice sermon; church was crowded, people had to stand in back; Pallbearers were Geo. Grossheim, Bill Karban, Ben Neff, Athur [sic – Arthur] Barthel, Wm. Probst, John Lippert. Garedener in charge of funeral. Its raining a little this eve. Bert [Bertille] took eggs up 17 [cents]. U [Uncle] Fred, Bert [Bertille] & Rob. all got cards to attend Smithton Home Coming next Sat. parade 6:15.
