Rob. [Robert Brand] birthday 12 yrs. Nice day. Bert [Bertille] finished house cleaning upstairs. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up, making garden. Willi & John Braun here trying to get signers oil leasing again. A yr. today that Mrs. Orlet died. cloudy this eve.

Thursday, March 23, 1939

Beautiful day. Pap fixed fence. Bert [Bertille] cleaned 2 rooms upstairs, started in today. Davis of Belleville was here. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up, she went quilting, at school hall, he worked garden. Mrs. Stehfest had a stroke this morn. she is pretty sick. Tom Crowe 81 died will be at Quernheims funeral parlor tomorrow funeral Sat. morn. 9 o [clock] at Waterloo.

Wednesday, March 22, 1939

We planted bu. potatoes, sprayed trees, cleaned chicken house, sewed spiniach [sic] & lettuce. Schmidt & Dashner got old magazines here. Mauff was here, bought doz. oranges & lemons; Pap sewed alfalfa seed. Bill [Klein] & Bert [Bertille] went to lent service at Red Bud this eve.

Tuesday, March 21, 1939

Ironed, patched, planted out 50 more frost proof plants. Pap sewed orchard in oats, made potatoe ground ready etc. Beautiful weather. 62 [degrees]. Spring begins today. Bert [Bertille] baked cookies this morn. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped in went to see Buehler’s.

Monday, March 20, 1939

Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & pap went to see the O leary place. Bert [Bertille] washed; fried in bacon & sausage, we made garden planted out, onions frost proof plants cabbage 62; pears lettuce, spinach. Pap sewed clover seed. Wittenauer finished sewing oats here. Sure beautiful day 60 [degrees]. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were at Athens got there quilt, this eve came to Hecker, & she & Bert [Bertille] went quilting, Firemen got 2 quilts in again, both plain, peach & green.

Sunday, March 19, 1939

Went to mass. Leo & family came for dinner. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & Bill [Klein] came this afternoon had supper, we went fishing Bill caught one Uncle ate it for supper. Emil came this eve. We had collection 2nd in church today for German Refugees; according to Bishof [sic] laws. John Wiegand, nee Kleber have a baby boy since Tues.

Len. Mertz bought 80 acres ground from Wm. Gregson, not quite $9.00 acre. Harry Wittenauer was here.

St. Patricks & cold 22 [degrees] this morn. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & Leo & family helped with butchering today; made 25 lb. summer sausage today; done butchering early, gave Emil piece liver; got 10 lb. beef this time. last time had 5 lb. beef.

Cold this morn. Went to Smithton, to Heap’s & Still’s; went to Leo’s, ask them to help butcher tomorrow. Poultry meeting in school hall tonite Ed Griffin principal speaker.

Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came & Bert [Bertille] went to church funeral of Mrs. Parker 49. church was crowded; mass said by Fr. Aydt, Rattermans Schumacher. Pallbearers are Oscar Birkner, Adam Eckert, Ed Schneider, Ted Eichenseer, Willie Harbaugh, Roy Staufenbiel. People here from all over. Myerscough of Ruma etc. Bert [Bertille] went to quilting again this afternoon, finished 1 quilt done. Bill [Klein] came & Bert [Bertille] went along to Red Bud lent service tonite.
