Cloudy, & thunder this morn. again, no threshing today again. Wittenauer stopped. Belleville has homecoming, yesterday & today. Started in threshing here this afternoon at 2 o’clock; plenty wet, Klotz’s machine is also threshing; all worked pretty late. Emil came over.

We ate our first spring chicken for this yr. today. Went to Belleville this afternoon, Bert [Bertille] got dress 25 [cents]. Harry Wittenauer stopped in; will be threshing here Sat.

So hot, this morn. again yesterday 99 in shade. 109 on street, Chas Stookey said. Pap went to Red Bud got oil changed 4040 miles, nearly got year now. Everybody busy threshing now. Thurs. they were 500 men in bunch came to W.P.A. Quarry made fellows stop working, got 40 hr., guys from E. St. Louis were getting 80 [cents] were cut to 40 [cents], they want it back to 80 again going around stopping all W.P.A. jobs; after that 300 more men came to see if they were working closed down. Rained this eve. & pretty heavy up north at Belleville.

Went to Belleville, 9 pks. potatoes @ 25 [cents] & 3 pks. for 15 [cents]. sold carrots 6 bunches @ 5. apples pk. 35 [cents]; summer sausage 4 lbs. @ 40 [cents], eggs 15 & 14 [cents] all sold out at 10 ‘ o clock; went good; we couldn’t sell no onions. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary had been here.

We had little rain this morn. again but it hailed at Leo’s, & places. We went up Bert [Bertille] did the baking etc; rest picked berries. 23 gal; picked apples. to take to Belleville, they already sold 23 gals. Wed. there Marita came along home with us; over nite good girl.

Went to Leo’s helped plant patch corn & make hay this afternoon; had lunch & chicken dinner there. We also had first cabbage of season of ours today. Rained this afternoon, but not so much, we need it alwful [sic] bad day. Mrs. Willing Kreher came home from Belleville Hospital yesterday, after giving birth to a 3 lb. baby, which is still in hospital in incubator. Planted out tomatoes & pepper plant last for season, sprayed potatoes. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came, she went to Mrs. Staufenbiels, to see about her dress. Mrs. Agnes Kroll died of a stroke this morn; while Kate was at mass; she has been blind for good many years.

Went to Belleville this afternoon, Bert [Bertille] got new dress & hat. Leo & family came this eve. Bert [Bertille] was at Mamie’s a little while, till Orlets came.

Cool this morn. Chicks still dying 18 this morn. Bert [Bertille] cleaned basement & scrubbed it. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up, working garden. Eggs 13 [cents]. Buettner was found dead at or near Douglas this morn, he shot himself in his car; was there since Mon. paper says; had 2 notes written, one to Mrs. Grosse & other lady at Belleville. Chas. Mehrmann of Belleville had a stroke & died suddenly yesterday eve. after work; his wife died 5 weeks ago from tooth extraction, he will be buried Thurs. morn. at 10:30 he turned Catholic when he married Becherer.

Jansen & Nobbe brought the new grass mower out & papa went along took it to Leo’s. $96.80 in trade for his old one, brought that here, pap bought from Leo $21.80. Went to Belleville this afternoon, to church & shopping – pap got new hat, Bert [Bertille] got white shoes. Nice day rain last nite.
