Tuesday, Aug. 30, 1932

Ed Meng was here & got the horse to rake his hay. Papa is hauling wood. The New Athens Cleaners where here, suits cleaned for 75¢. Some people here wanted to buy potatoe [sic] onions. Bertille went up town this eve, mailed a letter to Aug. Blackburn $3.00 check for road rent. This eve, we all went out to Uncle Fred’s, ate watermellon [sic].

Saturday, Aug. 27, 1932

Papa hauled 2 loads of wood this morn. Ed Meng was here a little while. Jung got 12 doz. egg 15¢ this morning. Today is Farm Bureau Pinic [sic] at Chaplin Bridge. The Eisenbart property household good etc. is being sold this afternoon at Red Bud. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came & Bert went along to the sale, they bought all different things. Henry came up to get whey, but they had no more, so he let his barrels stand up there.

Wednesday, Aug. 24, 1932

Papa went over to see Mr. Ed Meng. It is so awful hot again today, & nights are cool. They are surveing [sic – surveying] for hard road from Waterloo to Hecker, & the paper says it to, on the old road to Hecker, & then from Hirsts’ corner to New Athens. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up this evening & we took them along to Breezy Hill to a free birthday dance, the boss wife at the Condensery birthday, Country Club Orschestra [sic – Orchestra] music, they took up collection, with the hat at 12: oclock, then they played till 1:30, & a big crowd. When we came home we ate watermellon [sic], Aunt Mary brought one along up.

Tuesday, Aug. 2, 1932

We washed & ironed, patched. George Wagner & kids where here awhile. Strodt was here from Burksville & wanted to buy a house, but it was too much money for him. Jack Ganley bought $30.00 part interest this morn. he works at Phil Braun’s helping to build a shed; they had frolic yesterday putting it up, they called over the lines, everybody was welcome to help. It rained this afternoon. We heard there where 5 families from the city moving out to Lords Corner, all boys that where raised in Lords Corner, starting in farming. Nick Frisch from that corner is moving on Wm. Sheets place by New Athens. Papa sewed alfalfa seed this afternoon, with Meng’s sewer.

Saturday, July 30, 1932

Ed Meng was here this morn, him & George Wagner are going to a sale in the bottom today. Papa went to Matt Frisch’s sale by Oak Grove, bought chicken coop feeder for $1.10, lot of people & everything brought a good price. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary Henry & family where all at Marquadt’s sale in Waterloo & bought lots of junk. George Wagners’ family where here this evening.

Tuesday, July 26, 1932

The weather looks awful bad this morn. Rosalia is supposed to go to the dentist, but didn’t on account it rained pretty much. Papa & Ed. Meng went to a sale John Fauss by St. Joe, papa bought a rake, & a few articles. This evening we went out to Uncle Fred’s & brought there victrola up here for them, & they came up to & got flour. It looks like rain, but it all passed over. Henry & the boy’s where up & got some whey.

Wednesday, July 13, 1932

Papa has to go down to Ed. Pabst, they are going to thresh this morning after 9 o clock, he has to haul his third home. He hauled one load before dinner & 1 after, we got 55 bus. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up she brought her patching along & we help her. Henry came up to see how far the threshers where. Ed Meng & Hy. Armstutz where here this evening. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary got a call to come to Buehler’s threshing oats.

Tuesday, July 12, 1932

We patched this morning. Henry was here, he got 2 barrels of whey at the creamery. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came here, from threshing at Henry Birkner’s. It is awful hot this afternoon. Ed. Meng & Clif where here got the mule.

Wednesday, June 29, 1932

Papa & Rosalia went out to Henry’s to get the harness & plow, he traded his horse to Kelley for 2 horses & hay; he brought the horses yesterday & got a load of how & today he said he was coming after the rest. Emil was here & him & papa started the team out in a plow, some circus. Ed. Meng was also here. Clifford brought there horse over & took the saddle horse & went riding. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came to help make hay. They where here for lunch. They brought Mr. Gambach home this evening & will be buried Fri. afternoon at 1:30, the paper states he took cresote [sic – creosote], Mrs. found him at 7 o’clock in the barn lying face downwards.

Friday, June 10, 1932

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came this afternoon, he & Henry Meng helped papa make hay. They where here for lunch, supper. There was an airplane came from the north & flew around Hecker, made 4 circles, then went backa gain, haven’t heard who it was yet. Seen in the paper Matt Crowe, insurance agent while trying to crank the car broke his arm. Mrs. Benedict of Red Bud also broke her left arm, she broke the right one not long ago, she fell again.
