Papa strawed the potatoes this morn. this afternoon he went out to help Ettling fix the bridge on his road. It was in the paper Waterloo yesterday that Zeno Mendel barber of Waterloo have a little boy born last Sat. at the Red Bud hospital. They now have 2, a boy & girl. The twins of Emil Quernheim born on leap year where babtized [sic] Sun, Paul & sponsor Mr. & Mrs. Aug. Bodebach cousins, & Margaret, sponsors, Olga & Edna [unclear] Quernheim sisters of Emil. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up to stay overnight in Hecker, they came over here, they where at Belleville this afternoon & brought us each a dress goods along.

Henry is putting up hay today, Papa, Rosalia went out for lunch, dinner, lunch.  I baked bread, coffee cake, doughnuts, cake, today.  I seen in the paper that Mrs. V. Heck, & Mrs. Zeno Mendel gave Miss Hilda Bertram a surprize [sic] Miscellanous [sic] shower, on her approaching marriage next Tues. July 14 to Slyvester [sic – Sylvester] Miller, at the Miller residents.  Mr. & Mrs. Archie Whiel left for a 10 day trip to Chicago & Minnesota.  Hy. Minneman of Fults Ill, died & was buried last Wed. afternoon, he is a brother to Chas. & Ed. of here.  Mrs. Ed. Shmidt of Waterloo, Jake & Dan’s mother died Thurs & will be buried Sat. morn.

Wednesday, May 13, 1931

For once we got a real nice day again.  Mrs. Dan Mendal, the barbers wife died & is being buried this morning at Waterloo.  Rosalia & Bertille went to church this morning.  We went down in the truck patch this afternoon.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here for supper.  They bought a piece of beef & then we had a good supper.  We all then went to the show, & always a crowd.  There play was Mr. & Mrs. Brown.  There is a dance at the Brick House tonight given by the Horse Creek Ramblers, lots of people went there after the show.  Eggs are 12¢.

Friday, April 24, 1931

We all went out to Henry’s this afternoon.  Papa & Henry started building the milk house.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here but there was nobody at home.  They came back again this evening a little while before they went to Elmer Parker’s birthday dance, we where not invited, Mrs. Blackburn told them to come.  Bertille got the mail today.  In the Waterloo Times it was that Jac. Schaefers have a little baby girl.  The Misses Rose & Alice Harbough went to Mc’ellester Oklomoa [McAlester, Oklahoma] to visit there sister Elenora.  Ed Meng sold his 85 acre farm on Richland Creek last Sat.  Henry Kleber of Floraville was the buyer, at about $40. an acre.  The Hecker bank was appraised last Sat. morning, the lot & building at $1200, & fixtures $650, Albert Gardner, Emil Hartman, H.M. Hill where the appraisers.  There was Central Examination held last Sat. in Hecker Public School by Mr. McCarthy & various schools in Prairie Du Long the teachers present where, Miss Gladys Hull, Miss Hilda Wihelms.  Last Friday Mrs. Dan Mendel the barbers wife was taken to E. St. Louis to the hospital for treatment.  The John McCarthy farm was sold at Master’s sale last Sat.  Dr. N.B. Pautler Dr. for $2500.  We had lunch out at Henry’s today.
