Snowed a little this morn; but turned out to be nice, got warmer. Went to Red Bud to mass. Went out to Uncle Fred’s for dinner; A. [Aunt] Mary isn’t so well these days.

Nice day, cold. Emil came said pap could ride with him to funeral, Reunker went along also, down to house of Hy. Stahleheber, with service in Evangical [sic] church, then to Village cemetery.
Friday, Jan. 7, 1938
Cleaned, took tree down etc. Pap cleaned barn. A man stopped in, to find the way to Mrs. Hy Braun. Mr. John Horn is very ill at present. Ed. Cortner lost small shoats – 8.
Thursday, Jan. 6, 1938
Fried in bacon & pork sausage. Henry & Leona went to Belleville with a calf left Billy [Willis] here. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came up after the batteries by Probst’s this evening. We went to Renneker’s, paid up telephone dues, 50 & extra for drop tax; Emil came there & we had pinochle game – 10 games 9 to 1. Mr. Hy. Stahlebeher died, will be buried Sat. afternoon; the bell rang this morn. It is getting awful cold rapidly.
Wednesday, Jan. 5, 1938
Butchered 2 hogs, 223 lb. each. Henry, Leona & Billy [Willis], Leo & Rose [Rosalia], Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary, all helped. had lunch & dinner. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stayed for supper, sugar cured meat this eve. Hill was here collecting telephone dues, got meeting at Kammlers tonite, pap didn’t go, electing new officers this eve. for the new year. John Horn is pretty sick; doctor was there this morning. Eggs 23 [cents] hogs $8.40.
Tuesday, Jan. 4, 1938
Washed ironed, sure nice days. We went to Leo’s & Rose’s [Rosalia] tonite; asked them to help butcher tomorrow, one for us & 1 for Uncle Fred.
Monday, Jan. 3, 1938
Went out butchering at Henry’s had dinner. Oliver Ruhel was here, working on agricultural problems. Nice day.

Beautiful day, little cold. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stopped awhile, then went home, before it starts to get muddy.

New Years Day & it is beautiful, sun shining nice, but roads are terrible. Voges of Lords Corner came out yesterday with wagon & 4 horses, don’t see that very often anymore. Most people walked out, to hard road. We went to Red Bud mass, received 1938 calandar [sic] & Sunday Visitor from Fr. Spors, was home all day. Probst & Kreheres brought our share of clover seed, 2 bus. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came down, & we went along with them out to Uncle Freds.

Cleaned etc. Henry stopped in, got crushing done. Mrs. Geodelle is sick. Bert [Bertille] got mail, New Years Greeting from Helfrich girls, & card from Dupo, having the last raffle, for the church forbid it now, 1st prize quilt 2 $25 – 3 $20 – 4 – $10 – 5 – $5 to be raffled tonite but we got it to late, can’t send it back – $1. they wanted. Seen in Waterloo paper transfer of 105 acres from Emil Brand to Ed. Brand; never heard nothing about it; Received enveplope [sic] from Fr. Spors for Sunday collections 50 [cents] every Sun. it says.
