Ironed patched. Went to Waterloo, got AAA Wheat check $5.16. A guy selling or sharpening work, to earn for his dinner, we had none. Cold sun shining. Hill has in Waterloo paper, it is rumored, that Omer Schilling & Lucella [sic.- Lucille] Brand to be married in near future some mistake, he better quite [sic – quit] writing in news, anyway to put in false reports, such as that one is. Boy Boy. Dr. Werth’s have a little baby boy at St. Marys Hospital in E. St. Louis.

Raining. We washed. Pap went up town, took eggs up 20¢; got the Whip license – B.38-124. Its just raining all the time.

Still cloudy & raining, warm, the ice is melting away. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came brought a few articles, what we need for that day. Leo & Rosalia went to Belleville on business. Loyd & Mr. Ed Pabst came this morn. brought load corn. Sure is funny weather. Leo stayed for supper, we played cards. Rose had 1000 aces, pap 600 queens, Bert 1000 aces & twice 400 jacks, some real games.

Clean chicken house, got oats over. Bertie baked cookies. Sun don’t want to shine, still cloudy & slick icy roads. Eggs .21¢. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were up this afternoon. Loyd Pabst came brought book on the Orbon Stores, Iornmasters [sic – Ironmaster. Sure lot people dying from pneumonia, & flue epidemic, 35 died in Chicago 1 day; lot have it in New Athens. Hofmeister’s are sick; ugly weather, to damp. The paper & radio say the Matteson 10 yr. old boy that was kidnaped [sic] from his home at Tacoma Wash. 15 das. ago was found slain along a highway, was said to be the boy, was nude, blow marks on forehead etc. A case something like the Lindeberg’s baby that time; haven’t found the kidnapers yet; The Matteson family was to pd. a $28,000 ransom. Rosalia went to invite the neighbors for the dance. Leo came, then they went to see his uncle Geo. Roths family, Alois & Gertie were also there.

Henry came & we went along over to E. St. Louis to Furniture Stores; Dio [? – unclear] Slacks etc. Rose went up town took eggs up, 21¢; invited some people to her wedding dance. Floyd Pabst came brought potatoes up; the 3rd from the farm down there. Cloudy weather this days.

Went to mass. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary, Henry & family were all here for dinner & supper. Aunt Mary & Rosalia went to Lizzie Boll’s. We went to Pautlers tonite, Herb Probst & Eugene Neff birthday dance, sure a big crowd. Skaer Bros. played. Adm. 25¢.

Pap got crushing done. We went to Belleville this afternoon, went to church & to stores; got some rugs for bedroom. Cold & sleet ice, & raining tonite. Was 16 above at 7 o’clock this morn.
Friday, Jan. 8, 1937
Raining again all day. Pap went to Probst’s paid for repairs on Whip. Eichenseer’s have a new clerk Hy. Huelsmann is working there now they say. Berti got the mail, The ex post master Leohr died & buried last week; he had been ailing for quite a long time. Mrs. Walter Jauger was to taken to St. Mary Hospital for treatment, Pete Hoffmann is back at home again, but still unable to work.

Raining nearly all day. Went to Belleville this afternoon looked at some furniture’s stores. Telephone meeting at Geo. Wagners tonite. Pap & Bertie went over, drop tax is also due so it was $1.50 this mo. We played cards, then 6 hand & 5; ended pretty much even; had apples.

Cloudy & misting all day. We went to Waterloo got egg mash etch; stopped at Henry’s awhile; they have a little cold, boys didn’t got to school on account of the weather. We cleaned basement this afternoon & also the shed. We went to bed early, full nights sleep.
