Wednesday, April 12, 1939

Cold froze hard. 26 degrees guess peaches are done; suppose to be freezing tonite again. Bill [Klein] & sister came, found his dad Dominic Klein dead at 3 o clock in bed; he was 63 yrs old; is at Waterloo till tomorrow morn. Bill said; funeral would be Sat. morning. Bert [Bertille] cleaned front room wall paper; got pictures today all pretty good. Chas. Helfrich came looked at hay. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were by Frank Birkner’s today. The Floraville choir have a play tonite – “District School.”

Sunday, April 9, 1939

Easter church mass from 7:30 till 10:45 so long. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & Leo & family were all here when we got back; all had chicken dinner, soup here, & also for supper. Bill [Klein] came took pictures. Brand’s family weren’t up to get Easter eggs. Rained a little.

Saturday, April 8, 1939

Nice day. We went to Red Bud high mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up, she went to church. Nobbe & Horn, came got mare for Farbers; this eve.

Friday, April 7, 1939

Good Friday. 28 degrees; warmer again for today. Went to church 7 o clock. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped in. Pete Hoffmann of near Waterloo died at Querheim Parlor & Mrs. Glessener, Kroll’s sister, passed away to [sic]. Mr. & Mrs. Farbers were here looked at mare. Bert [Bertille] fixed doz. eggs & 9 for A. [Aunt] Mary’s. Went to Red Bud 3 o clock church. heard Fr. Ore Service on radio. Went to Waterloo to see Pete Hoffmann & Mrs. Glessner, they have 3 people laid out, being awful busy all week. Mr. Hill came collected telephone dues. Bert Thompson & family going to move on Weber Farm & Webers moving to New Athens.

Thursday, April 6, 1939

Holy Day. Went to 8 o clock mass. stayed in 1/2 hr. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped in awhile. Bill [Klein] & Bert [Bertille] went to St. Louis & E. St. Louis Hatcheries to see about chicks in May, went shopping at Belleville; went to Red Bud closing of Holy Hour from 7 to 8 o clock. Sure is cold.

Monday, April 3, 1939

Washed ironed patched. Pap cleaned barn, beautiful day. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up, they were by Louis Birkners to get eggs.

Sunday, April 2, 1939

Went to first mass recived [sic] palms. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped awhile. Bill [Klein] & Bert [Bertille] went to New Hanover to see about Wyandott eggs from Kettler, ordered them for next Mon; also stopped at the oil well on Gumersheimer farm working fast; lot people there.

Saturday, April 1, 1939

Leo & family came, had supper here. Leo & pap went to Ruma to sale & we went to Red Bud to Mrs. Gallaghers, also Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary went to sale; bought few articles, jugs. An oil drill is on Mrs. Al. Gregsons farm. but not started in to work yet. April fools today.

Friday, March 31, 1939

Went to Belleville got new lawn mower. 14 in 5 blade rubber tires $6.68; went to Leo’s helped saw wood had them for dinner. Jake & John Mueth Kettler [? – unclear] Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up, making garden. Egg 15 [cents].

Wednesday, March 29, 1939

Raining this morn. Uncle Fred went to Waterloo get oil changed. Aunt Mary stayed here. Leo & family came Marita stayed, they went to Athens to dentist; had dinner here. Sewed some lettuce & tomatoe seed & peas. Bert [Bertille] fixed curtains upstairs & put up. Received wheat check 1938 – $16.80. Bill [Klein] & Bert went to church.
