Windy & cold. Mehrmann got 8 doz. eggs @ 23¢. took bu. turnips for 50¢. Schmidt brought sack egg mash, took bu. turnips along back & 2 gals. lard emptied the 4 gal. paid 12¢ lb. Bert [Bertille] varnished kitchen floor. We went to Leo & Rose [Rosalia] for supper, Leo had to get his molasses from Keim’s, 13 gals. send 2 along home with us. Feureur brought us 12 bus. potatoes Wed. evening; so we have some to sell to.

Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1937

Beautiful day, washed ironed. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came had dinner here, he & Bert [Bertille] went to Waterloo on business. Emil came, he put in his lineleoum [sic – linoleum] at his place, in kitchen, all around. real pretty. Eichenseer put it in. Henry stopped in got crushing done. Lena Meng was here, see what pap tought [sic – thought] about oil leasing. A fellow here selling weather stripping for house, from St. Louis agent.

Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1937

Raining this morn. again a little, getting colder. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came this eve. brought us apples & Mail Order; paps shoes everything allright, shoes a little big. The Ladies Aid have euchre at Kammler’s Hall tonite, we didn’t go; we played pinochle, 3 games.

Monday, Oct. 18, 1937

Raining all day. Leo Cortner was here looking for shoats. Pap got Bill Fritsche down to look at the furnace, cleaned it all out, had smoked so bad yesterday; couldn’t make much fire, warm again today, haven’t got fire in furnace now.

Sunday, Oct. 17, 1937

Went to mass; we had real sermon, church from 7:30 till 9. Raining all morn & all day & nite. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped awhile after mass. Wusthmark [sic – wurstmart] & free dance at Smithton.

Saturday, Oct. 16, 1937

Pap got crushing done. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were here this afternoon; he went to Hy. Stahleber’s. Bert [Bertille] put flowers on windows. Mertz is giving tickets away for set dishes, ever $30. you get 11 pc. till you get all. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came, this evening, played radio – W.L.S. Barn Dance.

Friday, Oct. 15, 1937

Pulled turnips, several bus. – 3 for sale. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped in went to Red Bud. A fellow here yesterday selling magazines, was playing football & got concussion of brain, & was speechless, but could hear. Robinson was his name, wants to get enough money to have brain operation. Al. Mueller of Waterloo have baby boy.

Thursday, Oct. 14, 1937

Send a card for us to get group picture of Chas. Stookey’s Early Bird gang at KVSK. We had beef soup dinner. Schmidt brought sack mash feed; took our 4 gal. crock lard @ 12¢ lb. Mehrmann got 7 doz. eggs .21¢ & ½ bu. sweet potatoes 50¢; H. Wittenauer took ½ bu. to; sewing wheat here, yesterday afternoon & today. Cleaned bedroom, varnished furniture, & going to varnish floor tomorrow. Reports is that Mr. & Mrs. Pete Watchel have a baby boy Leroy, Tues. 4 girls 1 boy, & Mr. & Mrs. Ralph Wiegand have baby girl since Sun. morning.

Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1937

Raining & cooler this morn. Pap went out to Uncle Freds, then to Smithton, to the bank. Emil [Brand] was here this afternoon. We went out to Uncle Freds; had supper there, took them along went to Leo’s [Orlet], she [Rosalia?] took some pears ½ bu.; also some for us to.

Cooked kettle soap. Pap went out on business trip. Bert [Bertille] cleaned dining room varnished floor. Harry Wittenauer sewing wheat here today. Went to Red Bud this eve. Rosary Devotion.
