Rain & colder this morn. Bert [Bertille] took all the flowers out, put them in basement. Lena Meng was here awhile, stopped in on way home from town. Last nite was Wustmarket at Memorial Hall in Waterloo given by Catholics; also entertainment paper said. Leo & family came, he has sick colt, the one from us, he called Doc. Miller of Waterloo from here, he came here, & we all went to Leo’s, has swollen leg, both front ones; gave him stuff to rub on them, has an awful lot of pain, can’t lie down.

Thursday, Oct. 7, 1937

Beautiful weather, cut lawn yesterday. Pap hauling wood with truck. Berti [Bertille] cleaned front room, varnished floor. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up again this afternoon. We took them along to Waterloo, euchre tonite; at Memorial Hall, had big crowd; played 8 games & 10 points at head table. Pap won 7 got ovenware casserole, & Bert had 6, got water bucket. U. [Uncle] Fred 6 – got tablespoons. A. [Aunt] Mary only had 4, her name didn’t come out, only 4 prizes left for 4; played pinochle – 500. Domioes [sic] & euchre all 8 games blanket attendance prize; were mostly all strange to us. Mehrmann got 5 doz. eggs. 21¢. Band pratice [sic] at Geodelle’s tonite.

Friday, May 28, 1937

We went to Fr. Eschmann’s funeral at 9:30 the priests & relatives had dinner in Memorial Hall, they buried him at Belleville in afternoon, went through Hecker at 1:15 – 40 cars & 4 police cops; pretty large funeral but not like Fr. Stern’s; according to the size of church & parish, we stopped at Henry’s had dinner there Leona & Floyd & Billy [Willis] stayed at home; Fr. had so many bought bouquets, took them all out before mass; were also quite a few priests there, in Red Bud 87. Bishoff made sermon, also another Monsigor; he [Fr. Eschmann] looked natural, only didn’t have no glass lid, like Fr. Stern; otherwise same coffin. Querherheims [sic] in charge, we all got pictures in remembrance of both priests, he was 75 yrs. old; was born at Belleville. Uncle Fred & A. Mary were up this afternoon; working. The Catholic School children have there play this eve. the quilt was won by J. Griffin; hall was crowded Aunt Mary said; Fr. Orlet & Feonnies & Ayal. were present.

Sunday, June 7, 1936

Aunt Mary came & went along to Waterloo with us to church, Fr. Freund said his first mass, so many people at church; they had dinner here. Omer & Bert went to the banquet there at Memorial Hall, over 200 people for dinner there. went to the reception tonite, children play, violin solos, had sandwiches & soda. Rich Crowe came along with Fr. Freund from Ohio this morn; & also some college boy’s. Awful hot today.

Tuesday, Nov. 28, 1933

We wrote a letter to Internal Revenue Office in East St. Louis, to find out about hog tax. Hy. Meng was here to see about hogs. Ed. Meng is butchering today. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came brought 2 cherry trees up. We went to Waterloo to the Memorial Hall, played euchre, 7 games where played, & 10 point on head table before the bell taps. Bertille had 5 & got pillow cases. Papa 4 got apron, Rosalia only had two didn’t get anything. Turkey for attendance prize was won by Mrs. Rheinhold. 500, pinochle, euchre, dominoes play. large crowd. Adm. 25¢.
