Wednesday, Oct. 4, 1939

Cleaned chicken house put in straw. Went to Leos this afternoon helped fan wheat, make hay, had supper there brought Marita along home; they are coming down this eve, to get truck take calf in tomorrow; to Belleville. News Athens Catholic church parish have chicken supper today. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] & Bill [Klein] came, we played 3 games pinochle.

Sunday, October 1, 1939

Went to mass. Leo & family came. Leo went to church here, then we went out to Uncle Freds for dinner & supper. Mrs. Armstutz & Fred & his wife came out to. Josie Keller’s brother Fred were here, stopped in had supper here; has a new Oldsmobile, sedan; was a demenostrater [sic?]. Bill [Klein] came Bert [Bertille] went out with plymouth this eve. Our radio isn’t working.

Wednesday, Sept. 27, 1939

Leona’s birthday. 29 yrs. Pap hauled 2 loads wood. Bert [Bertille] finished cleaning upstairs. Leona was at Clevelands cooking applebutter. Virgil Eichenseer came got catalogs got a newspaper drive at Cathedral at Belleville at present. Leo & family came this eve. Bill [Klein] came & Bert [Bertille] went along home to his mother to get title for his car, they were going to go to Waterloo, so we came back home again; had watermelon, but wasn’t any good.

Sunday, Sept. 24, 1939

Went to mass. They are repairing the commounion [sic] railing in church in Red Bud. Firemen’s have fish fry & pinic [sic] & dance in Manier’s Park today. Leo & family came left Marita here with pap. Mr. & Mrs. Geo. Ducan & Mr. & Mrs Lester Huebner & baby Richard; came at 4 o’clock. had supper. here left about 6:15. Bill [Klein] came went to pinic [sic] awhile, & took Leo & Rose [Rosalia] along to show. Mrs. Spalt won quilt playing bluey & so did Alma Hyp.

Thursday, Sept. 21, 1939

Went to Leo’s, Pap helped hauled load corn to mill & Leo had hay wagon, went over with 2 loads, this morn. this afternoon made hay. Eggs 18 [cents] here at store.

Wednesday, Sept. 20, 1939

Went to Leo’s all day helped strip molasses cone. he hauled one load, in over to Keim’s at Floraville; Bert [Bertille] made pumpkin pie; had lunch, dinner & lunch; nice cool, days. Went to Smithton tonite to meeting held by Rev. Fr. Kunkel & Rev. Hosto, at Turner Hall to keep America out of war, what we must do, write a letter or send telegram to U.S. Senator Scott & Lucas & Congressmen Edwin Schaefer. that would help.

Monday, Sept. 18, 1939

Went to Belleville with things didn’t do so good, couldn’t sell everything, got 23 [cents] doz. for eggs. had potatoes & apples along for Orlets; couldn’t sell it all. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up this afternoon. Henry came got apples & tomatoes. Went to Orlet’s pap operated on pigs. Leo plowing. Bert [Bertille] cut lawn this eve. nice cool weather now; if it stays.

Sunday, Sept. 17, 1939

Went to mass. Leo & family came this afternoon him & pap went down by Feruers. Bill [Klein] came fixed Whip. put in new axle, had supper here. Went to Floraville Home Coming. Sure had crowd, sold out on chickens & almost everything had dance in hall in eve. musci [sic] by Ebels Merry Markers & German Band.

Friday, Sept. 15, 1939

Hot again. Went to Henrys, took a load of wheat to Waterloo – 18 bus. got 67 [cents]. Top price is 82 [cents] today. Wheat is getting hot again, took load of ours from here off got 73 [cents] & took another load from out there 67 [cents]. Henry & family, Leo & family & Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were all here this eve – eating watermelon had 40 lb. melon; & it was sure good.

Went to Orlets, had dinner & supper, Pap helped dig potatoes, they finished today; Bert [Bertille] took care of Marita.
