Washed ironed; hauled wood, in basement. Nice just like spring. Bill [Klein] came brought pictures, that we took on Christmas, they got pretty nice, all except 2, was no good. Berniece got doz. eggs; Geo. & Clara’s Wedding Ann. today, german band played a piece in there honor. Emil came over to get 4 doz. eggs for Grace Ellis, who came this eve. 25 [cents].
Monday, Jan. 2, 1939
Went to Leo’s butchering 1 hog. Uncle Fred helped to; roads were little muddy coming home. Mr. Meng was buried this afternoon, we couldn’t go to funeral. they had services at house at 2 o clock, then to cemetery.

New Year (1939). Went to mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stayed awhile, then went home. Leo & family, came had dinner & supper here. We went over to see Ed Meng; looks natural, nice flowers. Sure some nice day just like Easter. warm out, beautiful.

Beautiful day warm. Berniece was over awhile. Emil came paid for his wood. Pap has Marita’s chair fixed now, all but to paint it yet. Pap went to Red Bud this morn. got car greased, oil & gas.
Friday, Dec. 30, 1938
Nice day, cold it was 13 this morn. Leo & family came, we went along with them to Henry’s, played cards, checkers etc. had cookies. Mr. Ed Meng had another stroke & passed out at 4:05 this eve. Meng Undertaker of Freeburg got him this eve. he had 6 strokes & 5 yrs. since he had the stroke he couldn’t talk plain.

Cloudy this morn., & afterwards a beautiful day, nice sunshine. Went out to Uncle Freds for dinner & supper. This eve. Orlet family came & took us along went out there again, we played cards, had candy, nuts, pop corn etc. The paper says Andrew Mueth 62 yrs. old was buried Tues. morn. with Requiem High Mass in Paderborn, & to cemetery; but he wasn’t going to church so that false report, priest was at house & prayed & also at cemetery; they say. Got our truck license 29510.
Wednesday, Dec. 28, 1938
Not so cold today, 16 [degrees] this morn. Pap went out & got load wood for Emil; this afternoon got wheat at Henry’s, & got crushing done. Fire engine went down to Joe Hempe’s; machine shed burning implements burned; that is on Mrs. Albert Gregsons farm. The Officer that won at election day of Monroe Co. are giving a free dance at Pautler’s tonite. The Young People of Parish here are having a party also tonite.

Boy! how cold it got 14 [degrees] above this morn. tonite to be 10 [degrees] awful severe cold wave in Canada & Chicago & places, were it is below zero. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up, he went to Red Bud she stayed here.

Raining nearly all day. Bill [Klein] came & took us along to Leo’s. Henry’s family also went for dinner & supper; played cards, checkers etc. Pap went along home with Henry’s & Bert [Bertille] went along with Bill to there place, for him to do his work, then came home again.
Sunday, Dec. 25, 1938
Christmas. Went to 6 o clock mass, stayed for 2nd mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary, Henry & family & Leo & family & Bill were here for Turkey dinner & supper, took pictures in afternoon, beautiful warm day. Went out to Henrys this evening, seen what Santa Claus brought, tree etc. so many things.
