Awful hot today. Canned plums made perserve [sic]. Eggs 16¢ down again. Werner Kammler is threshing today at Meng’s.

Baked cookies, cake; cleaned chicken house took onions out; canned 2 qts beets. Everybody starts threshing this afternoon, all outfits. Went to Leo’s this afternoon helped bake cake & pie shells for threshing tomorrow. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came. Leo & Rose came after truck to get more coal left car here; takes so much coal this year.

Washed, ironed; canned 5 qts. apples. We went to Leo’s this afternoon helped them pick apples & can them, iron, had supper. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & J. [Josie] Keller also helped. Hy. Armstutz brought sack feed down.

Saturday, June 26, 1937

Canned 3½ qts. berries & baked 2 pies. Went to Belleville, dentist & church. Uncle Fred was up early this morn, working corn, before it got to hot. There is a a free farewell dance at Oak Grove tonite, he is going back to Burksville again. Alois & Gerti stopped wanted to take me [Bertille] long to New Athens, didn’t go.

Went out to Uncle Fred’s picked 4 gals. berries. Made ½ gal. & 23 glasses jelly & canned 4 qts., had lunch at A. [Aunt] Mary, came home & put berries away; finished varnishing in kitchen.

Wednesday, June 16, 1937

We have 10 little pigs born Sun. nite. Raining this morn. baked cookies. Mr. Jake Helfrich’s wife of Belleville was taken to hospital & died; nee Mueth of Paderborn. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came this afternoon picked cherries. We went to Leo’s; picked dewberries, not ripe enough yet, picked about 1½ gal.; took few home just to eat; Rose made jelly, had lunch there. Cut lawn & broke the mower, in wheel. Went out to see Uncle Adam & Emil, he is in bed, there all day, don’t eat much & can’t sleep, has awful back pain, the doctor came when we were there, he says its old age & cold in kidneys. Emil doesn’t get much sleep either had to be there day & nite, Uncle lies nearly all day, can’t sit up & nite he sits & can’t lie down. We stopped at Henry’s on way home; they picked the cherries, ½ gal. & peas, almost milk bucket full, & ain’t finished yet; she has beets to can to; lots work.

Washed ironed. Pap painted. The ford agent of Waterloo was here with 1935 Ford coach $450.00. Werner Kammler was around gathering rubbish around town. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up again this afternoon, had horse worked his corn patch; canned pt. cherries. A lady here selling books. Burkhardt was here looked at the horse. Canned 2 qts. beets.

Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1936

Baking bread etc. Rained heavy & wind last nite. Pap went up in the woods. Canned pickles, from Aunt Mary. Uncle Adam & Emil came to see us this afternoon. Eggs 24¢.

Wednesday, Sept. 16, 1936

We baked bread, etc; canned pickles. Mr. Eichenseer & the Fairbank Morse Co. man, was here yesterday advertising electric radios, refrigerator etc; had everything in a trailer house; seem pretty. Pap went over to Geo. Wagner, he is making garden fence. Had a nice rain this morn, cooler now, wind in the north. Sure lot flies these days. Miss Loretta Kraft is giving a birthday dance at Paulter tonite, musci [sic] by Del Rose Trio Gents 25 ladies free, we went in, nice crowd.

Cleaned garden, cooked plum jelley [sic] & canned juice. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came this morn. had chick dinner here. Henry also he came & cut hay. Cooler today, good many cars went to Ruma this morn; the vows of the Most Precious Blood Sister Day. We went to Renneker’s this evening; Klotz’s were there too. Eggs 18¢.
