Leo & Rose [Rosalia] went to Belleville, Marita stayed here; had dinner or lunch when they came back. Raining this afternoon & eve. We now got Pope Pious [sic] XII elected Wed. Cardinal Paccellie [sic – Pacelli]; 61 yrs. old. German band played for Hess girls from Hecker.

Friday, March 3, 1939

Beautiful day. Boys stayed here & Henry & Leona went to Belleville; took clover seed @ 4 [cents] – 3 20 lbs. all had dinner here. Rob. [Robert] got mail. Bert [Bertille] got a cross & 16 more to sell – @ 25 [cents]; ain’t going to sell any.

Pap sewed clover seed. Emil came got bu. [bushel] potatos [sic]. Went to Belleville this afternoon; lot of people in town.

Wednesday, March 1, 1939

Beautiful day. Went to Waterloo this afternoon, got mash etc. stopped in at Henry’s. Leona is better today again. Pour kids here selling seeds. Also Grover’ Cleveland, Emil & Steve played solo at Emils this afternoon. Mrs. Renneker & Mrs Cleveland went to Klotz’s quilting. Roads are awful muddy at present.

Tuesday, Feb. 28, 1939

Rained heavy & windy all nite, snow is nearly all away now. Ironed, patched, etc. Eggs today here 14 [cents].

Monday, Feb. 27, 1939

Washed. Pap went to Farmers meeting at school hall with H. Wittenauer this morn. & afternoon with Henry. Ford agent of Waterloo stopped in, thought maybe we want to trade Whip for Model A. Ford he has there now. A fellow & Pierre Laut around selling magzaine [sic] don’t want any. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped in were over at New Athens took a quilt over for show next month. Leona isn’t feeling well up & down has it like Uncle Fred in gall [bladder]; eating to much pork.

Sunday, Feb. 26, 1939

Pretty icey [sic] this morn, we didn’t go to church today. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up stopped awhile. Leo & family came for dinner & supper, he was stuck by his mail box; slipped in ditch.

Saturday, Feb. 25, 1939

Everything white, 3 in [inches] snow & snowing all morn. Bert [Bertille] baked dewberry custard pie. Pap was by Emil awhile, cleaned his walk for him.

Friday, Feb. 24, 1939

Beautiful day; not cold. Starting smoking our summer sausage today. Ivo Rapp came home from hospital today, but can’t walk around yet; he had operation on his leg, had piece still in it. Alma Klotz isn’t very good, so weak & backache.

Thursday, Feb. 23, 1939

Nice day warmer. Pap cleaned barn. Eggs 15 [cents] now. Nic Hess have baby girl, since yesterday. Mary Schaefer Harrison of Belleville have baby boy.
