Cleaned; baked bread. Papa went to town, bought things for tomorrow, 10¾ lbs. beef 20¢. etc, cabbage, celery & things for salad. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came had supper here & helped line things up. Lizzie Boll helped also. Leo, Isd. & Rose & Bert & Mrs. Orlet went to Belleville, shopping & by Fr. Orlet; Instructions & confession by Fr. Rattermann. Very Beautiful day.

Monday, Jan. 18, 1937

Henry & family & Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were all here for dinner, helping us, clean 2 ducks, & baked 7 cakes & 10 pie crusts, cleaned basement etc. A fellow around selling pencils 2 for 5¢. Rosalia got a letter from Fr. Stern, congratulations & God’s blessing, for a happy wedded life. Beautiful day. Pap & Henry & Uncle Fred all went to Kammler’s Hall for a Farm Bureau & Benifit [sic] meeting, the hall was to cold & saloon not big enough, lot of farmers present, reelected new members, Ruhel – & President etc. Got the chev. license No. 655 – 890. Sure lot of people down with flu.

Saturday, Jan. 16, 1937

The John Kaltwasser farm was sold this morn. at the quarry, brought $10,000, some price for farms these days; Nic Cortner bought it, 160 acres, with the quarry & all. Telephone meeting this afternoon. Eliza Boll got reelected operator, John Braun was against her. Leo & Isadore were here this evening, he had got a card from Sanitary Milk Producers, that there was to be a meeting held at Paulter’s the same nite as the wedding dance, so they went to Eliza Boll’s & called in to Paulter but there is no milk meeting there that nite, he said.

Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1937

Still cloudy & raining, warm, the ice is melting away. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came brought a few articles, what we need for that day. Leo & Rosalia went to Belleville on business. Loyd & Mr. Ed Pabst came this morn. brought load corn. Sure is funny weather. Leo stayed for supper, we played cards. Rose had 1000 aces, pap 600 queens, Bert 1000 aces & twice 400 jacks, some real games.

Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1937

Clean chicken house, got oats over. Bertie baked cookies. Sun don’t want to shine, still cloudy & slick icy roads. Eggs .21¢. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were up this afternoon. Loyd Pabst came brought book on the Orbon Stores, Iornmasters [sic – Ironmaster. Sure lot people dying from pneumonia, & flue epidemic, 35 died in Chicago 1 day; lot have it in New Athens. Hofmeister’s are sick; ugly weather, to damp. The paper & radio say the Matteson 10 yr. old boy that was kidnaped [sic] from his home at Tacoma Wash. 15 das. ago was found slain along a highway, was said to be the boy, was nude, blow marks on forehead etc. A case something like the Lindeberg’s baby that time; haven’t found the kidnapers yet; The Matteson family was to pd. a $28,000 ransom. Rosalia went to invite the neighbors for the dance. Leo came, then they went to see his uncle Geo. Roths family, Alois & Gertie were also there.

Henry came & we went along over to E. St. Louis to Furniture Stores; Dio [? – unclear] Slacks etc. Rose went up town took eggs up, 21¢; invited some people to her wedding dance. Floyd Pabst came brought potatoes up; the 3rd from the farm down there. Cloudy weather this days.
