Saturday, Sept. 14, 1935

Papa got hair cut; he went up to the crusher to see Roy Staufbiel. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, brought basket pickles along, they went to Red Bud to the sale of the late Mrs. Con Dehn. Bert went to town got 25¢ for eggs. The Dupo pinic [sic] which was supposed to be today is posponed [sic] till Thurs; we have chance on winning a Ford V8 there. Leona came up & Billy [Willis]. We & Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary went to Donahue’s to Herman Wolf’s wife’s birthday dance & may what a crown, Au Buchon’s family Orchestra.

Saturday, Sept. 7, 1935

Papa went out to Henry’s, Hempe Bros. were there wanted to buy team mares, but didn’t have the cash; Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary & Bertille went to Marrissa this afternoon to Barbecue pinic [sic] & Homecoming, had a nice program at 1 & 3 o’clock; people were strange they had supper here. All children & adults of Evansville, Prairie Du Rocher, Baldwin, & Hecker were invited over to Sportsman’s Park to see ball game, Adm. 25¢ over 17 yrs. of age, under free, they went with 3 truck loads from here Wittenauer’s, Hills & Eichenseers 25¢ ride, left at 12 & came back 6:15. Henry was up & got the hay rake.

Monday, Sept. 2, 1935

Labor Day. We canned damson plums & jelly. Firemen’s pinic [sic] at Red Bud; chicken supper at Donahues, Tipton parish giving it there. We went to Red Bud to see the parade & pinic [sic] awhile then went to Donahue’s, stayed for the dance. Adm 25. A C Buchon’s Orch. It started in raining about 5 o clock, & went home then. Not much of a crowd in the evening, quite a few had supper. The Smithons [sic] Catholics have pinic [sic] also, we have chances on there, things that are to be raffled, cash, – etc. Henry started plowing this afternoon here, had lunch.

Wednesday, Aug. 28, 1935

Henry & Emil & Grover putting up hay; had lunch dinner lunch; made 11 loads. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stopped here a little, then went to the pinic [sic]. We went this evening, to the Catholic Church pinic [sic], but didn’t win a thing; large crowd. K C Band; Aunt Mary was lucky got pillow cases, & tea kettle, & Uncle Fred won the $10.00 chance first in book, Miss Mary Ann $5.00. Maria Braun $2.00 Jennie Coop bedspread Emma Birkner tapestry rug; Schroeder of Waterloo won ton coal & L. Dalkert a fancy quilt, the rest, rug & flour, gas went to Belleville. Willie & Jack Ganley had a razzling for a while, Jack wanted to fight with Hy Birkner, Ben Schilling took him down town; went home then.

Sunday, Aug. 18, 1935

Went to Red Bud; Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came this afternoon for the firemen’s pinic [sic]. Mr. Barnphole of Okawville came & pap went along out to Henry’s with him, had a little argument about the colt out there; then went to Red Bud to see Becker Ins. agent. We went to the pinic [sic] about 4 oclock, & nothing much doing, but they had a big crowd in the evening; had 400 lbs. fish, all gone, sold all the books, $150. – chances, the prizes were raffled about 11 o’clock & were won – Enamel Heater – Wm Kemp of New Athens R2, $10.00 cash, party from Belleville, fancy quilt to Noel Roscow $5 cash – Mrs. L. Deuker Belleville, 100 lbs. flour – Joe Griffin Hecker, fancy quilt – Mascoutah – case Mound City Beer, Olivia Gregson 50 lbs. flour – Reitz – Waterloo, case Beer – New Athens – 1 ton coal Helen Miles – Belleville. The dance was crowded, Pals of Harmony, Horse Prairie in the afternoon, & Probsts from Athens called in. Aunt Mary got blanket playing bluey. Dudenhoeffer were out to. Henry & Leona went along to Belleville with Walter & Hilda took her home, the kids stayed here all night.

Monday, Aug. 5, 1935

We washed; ironed. Papa went in the woods. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were up this afternoon. Bernice got 1 dz. eggs. The prizes at Smithon [sic] yesterday were won $100.00 by Wil Grossman $50.00 Quirin girl; Eichenseer won a quilt, there was $25.00 & set harness & 22 quilts all for 10¢ chance. Bud Braun & Roy Neff was here selling chances for the pinic [sic] on 28th Aug. pap took one.

Wednesday, July 10, 1935

Papa repaired the lawn mower. Wheat is 77¢ at Red Bud. Mrs. Karl Boll is in the hospital in St. Louis, & was operated, getting along nicely. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came worked, across the street, had lunch here. Pierre Laut came, selling chances for fire men’s pinic [sic] on Aug 18. we took 1.

Monday, July 8, 1935

We washed, ironed, nice day. Papa went out to Henry’s hitch the team together; then set up shacks. Robert came along & helped up here had dinner, & set up some more this afternoon. Joe Schilling threshing a load, this afternoon, tried it out, ready to start. A man here selling apples. Berniece came selling chances for a quilt given by Sunday school for the pinic [sic] on Aug. 11. 5¢ chance. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up towards evening.

Wednesday, June 5, 1935

A man from Belleville was here & looked at the colt. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came & we went to Evansville to the 75 yr. Diamond Jubilee pinic [sic],  had supper there, stayed for the evening, raffled out some very beautiful quilts on the bingo stand; some nice prizes. We also went to see Volkmann’s, papa looked at the horses. In the evening they had a large crowd at the pinic [sic], Evansville band played; we didn’t stop till the diamond ring was given away, supper was served cafeteria style, plate supper, 35¢. they charged.

Sunday, June 2, 1935

Went to Red Bud in Uncle Fred’s car; raining all morning.We went to the Evangicals [sic] summer & pinic [sic] about 6 o’clock, had supper at home. Wasn’t much of a crowd. Birkner Orc. played musci [sic]; the quilts were won by Mr. Probst, Lena Birkner & some relative of Pabpenbergs, the first was raffled off & the other 2 by playing lotto. Harry Kammler gave a dance in the evening, spoiled the pinic [sic]. Moonlighters played. Ruth Hoffman 17 yr. old.
