Wednesday, May 21, 1930

Today the Bishop comes to Hecker to confirm 37 children.  Bertille went up to church at 6:30 this morning.  Henry, Leona, Mrs. Jake Geodelle were at church too.  Robert, Floyd was here at our house.  They all had breakfast here.  At 9 o’clock we went to church again the Bishop came.  The people were to meet the Bishop at Philip Cortner’s place.  There were quite a few went out with their machine all decorated.  Leona got confirmed today.  Mrs. Jake Geodelle was Sponsor.  There were 14 priests there with the Bishop.  Papa & Rosalia went to Belleville this afternoon.  Eggs are .17¢.  There is going to be a dance at Rapp’s tonight, but we got no invitation so we won’t go.  Miss Bertha Wolf of Belleville is in St. Elizabeth’s Hospital is under surgical attention.  She lives at 414 East Mckinley Street.  Papa & Bertille went out to Henry’s this evening.  Bertille took her first automobile lesson.

Tuesday, May 20, 1930

Leona, Robert, Floyd were up this morning.  Leona & Bertille went to church.  Leona got baptized and went to confession for the first time, tomorrow she is getting confirmed.  Bertille was her Baptizing Sponsor and Mrs. Jake Goeddel will be her confirmation sponsor.  After church this morning, Bertille went along out with Leona to help her do her work.  She baked cakes, scrubbed the porch & kitchen.  Papa & Rosalia went to Waterloo.  Rosalia got a pair of new shoes.  Bertille had dinner out at Henry’s today.  When they came back from Waterloo, they took Bertille along home, and then she went up to church to confession.  She gave the priest a dollar for Baptism.

Monday, May 19, 1930

Today all the Ladies of the Parish have to clean the church for confirmation.  Wednesday, the Bishop is coming.  Leona, Robert, Floyd were here this morning.  Leona & Bertille went to church.  Rosalia helped to scrub the church this morning.  Bertille went up to practice singing for Wednesday.  Father Grooten called up this morning and wanted to know if he could use the Whippet.  Papa said “yes.”  So he came down and Johnny was here too.  Papa went along with him to Chester.  He said he wanted to get some rock for the school house.  So Papa went with Father too, so I guess he will see Chester for the first time.  Rosalia & Bertille went up to Eichenseer’s and got Mamie and then we went to Joseph Braun’s & took our pillow slips back for the picnic.  There was a Jefferson Club meeting in Hecker tonight, at Griffin’s Hall.  In Kammler’s Hall the boys were tearing the stage out ready for the dance Saturday night.

Sunday, May 18, 1930

Today is Walter Reheis’ birthday.  He is 22 years old.  Aunt Mary came up to church with Oscar Birkners.  After church, Rosalia, Papa, Bertille went out to Uncle Fred and Aunt Mary’s.  When we got there they just was ready to go fishing.  So we all went along.  Uncle Fred caught 2, Papa 1, and Bertille one.  Oscar Birkner’s wife and kids came down fishing a little while too.  Then about 4:30 we went back and ate supper.  Fish Fry .  Ha!  Ha!  All day fishing.  In the evening Rosalia and Bertille went to church.  Tonight there is a dance at Haudrich’s, a barn dance.  Nick Schaefer is going to have his Thursday night the way we hear.  The Hecker Baseball Club was playing with Floraville.  Hecker won the game.  Hecker won every game played with them so far.  This morning the children made their first Communion and also some made Solemn Communion.  Those that made their Solemn were girls: Ethel Parker, Eunice Schneider, Rita Braun, Elenora Krehrer & Bernice Neff.  Boys: Lee Gregson, Lawrence Wittenauer, Morris Braun, Willie Braun, Wilbur Wittenauer.

Saturday, May 17, 1930

It is raining this morning.  Rosalia went up to church this morning . After church she was going to clean the church (and) Aunt Mary’s place.  But there was no one else there that was supposed to help.  So she came back home & went up in half hour again & there was no one there yet.  So went she came home again, she saw Mrs. Pour going up.  She stopped and told her there was no one there yet.  When they are ready to clean Rosalia has to let Mrs. Pour know.  She is cleaning on Mrs. Willie Braun place.  Rosalia killed a chicken spring for dinner today.  Mr. Ed Parker came this morning, he wanted to sell us some little chicks very reasonable.  Rosalia went up to clean church this afternoon.  Today is Emma Eckert’s birthday.  She is going to seven years old.  Tonight there are barn dances all over.  Adam Braun, Nick Schaefer.  Last Sunday night there was one at Rittemeyers.  There was an awful crowd there.  It rained all day today.  Rosalia took 2 doz. eggs to the store and got .17¢ a dozen.

Friday, May 16, 1930

Leona, Robert, Floyd were here this morning.  Leona & Bertille went to church.  Papa went to William Harbaugh to get crushing down this afternoon.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were here this afternoon.  Steve Rennecker came over and got a sack of corn for his chickens for .80¢.  In the evening Papa went over to Rennecker’s a little while.  Steve planted some sweet potato plants out.  Mr. Meng said we are going to have rain tonight.

Thursday, May 15, 1930

Leona, Robert, Floyd, were here this morning.  Leona & Bertille went to church.  Rosalia & Bertille went up to Mamie Eichenseer’s this evening.  We played ball, hi spice, and then we walked down to Deuker’s and talked with Ethel & Mrs. Deuker(sp?).  Then we stopped and talked with Eliza Boll a little while.  There is a dance out at Blackburn’s this evening, but we didn’t have no invitation so we didn’t go.  There was a big crowd there.  They charge .25¢ for the men.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were there.  Papa, Rosalia were out at Henry’s this afternoon.

Wednesday, May 14, 1930

Frank Conkey is to be buried this morning at the Catholic cemetery.  Church at 9 o’clock then to the cemetery.  He just first turned catholic.  Henry was here this morning.  Papa & Rosalia are setting posts.  Bertille baked cookies.  Rosalia was up town, she took 5 dozen eggs & got .18¢ a dozen.  Papa & Rosalia went out in the woods this afternoon.  Aunt Mary came down a little while this evening and then Aunt Mary, Rosalia, Bertille went to church.  George Wagner chopped one of his dead trees out in front of his house this evening.

Tuesday, May 13, 1930

It looks cloudy this morning.  Rosalia & Bertille washed & hung it in the basement.  Bertille went to church.  Papa, Rosalia went out to Henry’s to get some corn.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up this afternoon & from here they went to Waterloo & Red Bud & then came back here again.  They had Oscar Birkner’s baby, Erma, along & then they took it over to Frank Birkner’s wife and she took care of her till they went home.  Papa went up in the woods this afternoon.  Mamie Eichenseer came down a little while this evening.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came here a little while too.  From here they went to Charles Hepp.  They had a barn dance, they were invited.  But we didn’t have no invitation so we didn’t go.  We planted flowers out this evening, what Aunt Mary brought along from Frieda Buehler.  There were all kinds.  Bertille was at church this morning.

Monday, May 12, 1930

This morning Papa went down to Pabst’s to get some corn.  Leona, Robert, & Floyd were up this morning.  Leona went up by the priest.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were here too.  Uncle Fred was called on to help work at the new school house.  Aunt Mary was here for lunch.  Uncle Fred came down for dinner & lunch in the afternoon.  He was finished then.  Aunt Mary was here for dinner & lunch in the afternoon too.  Rosalia finished painting this morning.  Papa made 3 trips down to Pabst’s to get corn.  He has it all up here now.  Papa went to see William. A. Voges this evening about some pigs.
