Awful hot. Pap dug 2 rows potatoes. H. Wittenauer was here, going to thresh here tomorrow. Transfer in paper of Barney Kaiser to Joe Kaiser. We received the books for pinic [sic] at Red Bud from Fr. Spors. Henry Grossman 62 & Clara Keim 18 of Floraville were married last Sun. in St. Louis, dance in eve. at Keimes. Lightening last Sat. nite; stroke several places at Waterloo Hermans. Country Club; Johanning had 3 cows killed. Bill Weitkamp & Vivian Ripley beauty operator of Waterloo were married last Sat. in St. Louis. Some W.P.A. workers are back on job & others of [sic – off] for good; they had dynamite laid for quarry here by Hecker if they started in working, they would blow things up, so they didn’t work. We went to Leo’s awhile this eve; threshing at M. Mueth.

Wednesday, June 28, 1939

Nice day. cloudy & little rain this afternoon. Ed Helfrich & Leona Horcher are being married at Columbia today, wedding dance at Pautler’s tonite. Wm Braun was here, signing oil leases for another 3 mons $1. Pap signed again. cut lawn, cut in 16 qts. kraut this morn. Pap went to meeting at Kammlers. Leo & family & Bill [Klein] was here this eve. Leo’s they had heavy rain.

Sunday, April 16, 1939

Cloudy with showers. Went to mass. Children made there first Holy Communion; all dressed in white. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped in after mass awhile. Hubert McDermoot & Miss Schmidt were published for 2nd. time today. Mr. & Mrs. Lerow Haudrich are having there wedding dance at Totsch’s tonite, Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary got invitation card. The Happy Ramblers Orc. are playing & giving a dance at Kammlers tonite. Bill [Klein] came Bert [Bertille] went along to Dr. Eckerts, he wanted to pay him.

Wednesday, Feb. 8, 1939

Bert baked pie. Pap went to Waterloo got feed. Suppose to get cold tonite, to be zero. Pap splitting wood. Bill [Klein] came, we went to Waterloo to Pautler’s to wedding dance, Gummersheimer’s, old couple; nice crowd; good musci [sic].

Thursday, Jan. 5, 1939

Went to Waterloo to see Clara Mueth, stayed in awhile; stopped at Henry’s. Leo & family cam this eve. & Bill [Klein] & Bert [Bertille] went to Wedding dance at Pautlers. Helfrich girl & boy from Columbia Eckert; pretty nice crowd.

Saturday, Nov. 19, 1938

Pap went out to Henrys got barrl [? – unclear], ready to butcher, brought 5 lbs. beef along @ 18 [cents]. Went to Waterloo to Horn’s sale bought $1.50 all kind of articles. Leona got 4 chairs Leo & family & Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were all in to. Leo got card to come to surprize [sic] wedding dance of Kettler & Eitzenhoefer on Thanksgiving Day. Thurs. at Dicks Grove by New Athens.

Wednesday, Nov. 9, 1938

Nice day. We went to Leo’s help butcher, also Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & Mrs. Orlet helped. Vic Papenberg & Bessie Parker getting married 9 o’clock this morn. We went to dance at Daabs Club House, Elmer Parker & Cecelia were best, she wore dark blue dress, Bessie white & veil. Henry butchered today also, & we didn’t know it.

Sunday, Oct. 30, 1938

Went to mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stayed awhile. We went driving around this afternoon. Went to Walter Matzenbachers & Ruth Hoffmann’s wedding dance at Brezzy [Breezy] Hill tonite. Emil Geodelle & girlfriend Mabel Crook were attendants, bride wore white lace dress & maid pink, & such a large crowd. Schumacher’s Och. [Orchestra] 3 pc. [piece].

Friday, Sept. 23, 1938

Bert finished cleaning upstairs. Baked cake etc. Pap took lime dust spreader home out to Henrys with team & wagon, was going to help him spread but he wasn’t ready to start yet. Transfers in Waterloo paper Homringhausen Bro. to Chr. [unclear] Buehler. Going to be a free wedding dance at Log Cabin & one at MidWay Inn tomorrow nite; don’t know who is getting married. Went to Leo’s this eve. cut lawn etc. Leo took his dad home.

Tuesday, Sept. 13, 1938

Raining all day, starting at 8:30. Bert [Bertille] washed, had to hang it in basement on account of the rain, Josie Keller came out had dinner & supper here; had chicken for supper, she took eggs, chicken & potatoes along back. Birkners couldn’t came up, on account of the weather, roads being to muddy. Joe Schaefer & Loretta Biffar were married at Waterloo this morn. real rainy day; had wedding dance at Paulter’s pavilion we went; attendants were here [sic] sister Priscilla with rust color dress, & Mildred Rheinhardt blue; boys I don’t know; had nice big crowd, served cake to all. Schoenborns Orc. played.
