Billies [Willis] 6 yrs. birthday. Henry was up this morn. Raining this morn. & good shower this afternoon. Church pinics [sic] at Red Bud & Paderborn. We went to Red Bud for supper, Bill [Klein] came down from work at Smithton, & went to Paderborn pinic [sic], didn’t win a thing there. Some of the prizes, set of knives & forks to Ray Neff & quilt to Gert Neff, case beer to Cyril Haudrich, spread, Geo Orlet, gas [? – unclear] to Smithton spread to Jac Schoenborn; flour to Fred Watchels & others.

Monday, Sept. 28, 1936

Raining all day & cooler. Henry & Leona went to Belleville. Billy stayed here; boys were at school. The town lights were put up today, we had lights all over town tonite, at 5:05, turned on over at New Athens. Mr. Bill Kammler died, yesterday morn, of a cancer & stroke, will be buried tomorrow afternoon at the church & cemetery. Mr. Guker of Red Bud brought Joe Walcthel radio up $42.50 pretty nice, Philio, also brought a $17.00 here, its small Philio, nice an loud, we should keep it for a week, till Sun. morn.

We all went to Belleville this morn, got our dresser, Rosalia & Bert [Bertille] got shoes from Smalls, dress slippers $1.98 R & B work shoes $1.50. Steve Rennecker came over, him & Osie Neff was here when we weren’t at home Osie is going to buy Edwin Walcthels shares on the line. Steve & Osie are running trustee’s on town board. We worked in the garden, cleaned little chick house; Mrs. Bievenue was buried this morn. We went to Strecks butcher & slaughter house, seen them chain, stick & clean hogs, so fast.
