Monday, March 13, 1939

Floyd’s 10 yr. birthday. We didn’t go out. Mrs. Geo Parker died last nite at 9 o clock was in church yesterday morn; she had been going to a doctor. Louis Armstutz was here last nite, to get help dig cistern across from the church up there. Emil going on Paps place Tues. Washed, ironed, patched, scrubbed basement etc.

Thursday, Dec. 8, 1938

Raining today. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] brought baby [Marita] here & Bert [Bertille] went along to Belleville, had dinner here, Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary also at Belleville, Caming was here again. Emil came this afternoon awhile. Hecker church have 13 hr. Devotion today. Bill [Klein] & Bert went to Paderborn Sodality of Young boys & girls had banquet, given by Father Weskamp others playing cards, eating & drinking, & followed by dancing, musci [sic] by Jac. Schoenborn, new accordion & also Rheinhardt.

Thursday, Oct. 20, 1938

Bert [Bertille] went out to Henry’s helped her [Leona] house clean, 2 rooms. Henry & Billy [Willis] brought load corn up here. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were here, she went up to school house for meeting, making plans for centennial mass to be. Kenneth Kemp was here, looking for Emil. He isn’t at home tonite.

Monday, Aug. 15, 1938

Went to 6:15 Holiday Mass. Birkners were here awhile. We cleaned chickens etc. delivered everything cake, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, lard beets. Rained a little, light showers. Nice cool. Emil came awhile. Bill & Bert [Bertille] went to Belleville. Henry came this eve. he was to see Fr. Aydt. about sending Rob. [Robert] to Hecker School it’s alright he should send him; for to make his solemn communion.

Wednesday, Aug. 10, 1935

Awful hot. Ironed, patched. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came for church pinic [sic], they have to be in winner stand. J. Keller came got eggs, tomatoes; we went up to pinic [sic] this eve. Ray Wittenauer won set dishes. Doval Eichenseer 48 lbs. flour. Alice Hess – 100 sugar, Elmer Haudrich taspestory [sic – tapestry] quilt to Mrs. Burke St. Louis, awful crowd, Smithton band, played musci [sic] . Leo & Rose [Rosalia] & baby [Marita] came this eve; pinic [sic]. Mrs. Merhmann came wanted eggs. Chas. Dougherty (Elvira Haudrich) have twins, Aug. 5. girl & boy; 6 3/4 lbs. each; 1st. set of twin that Dr. Werth & Helwig caught; doing fine now.

Tuesday, February 1, 1938

Nice day. Pap went in wood; hauled some together, & brought load home. Bert [Bertille] washed. Went to Wagners quilting this afternoon; Mehrmann came got 6 doz. eggs @ 16 [cents]. Steve Stiffler & Al Gasser were here, looking at the horses again bought them, going to get tomorrow afternoon $135. team. The Catholics got card party in hall tonite; isn’t so cold tonite. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came; Bert [Bertille] went along up to the euchre, but none won a prize Bert [Bertille] had 7, they each 5 points. Mrs. Geo. Grossheim won attendance prize, cake cover; crowd wasn’t to large.

Sunday, Aug. 23, 1936

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stopped awhile after mass. There 38th wedding Anniv. The Hecker Catholic church pinic [sic] cleared $800. & Red Bud on ice cream social $300. all pretty good. We went to Pautlers to Al. Einwich birthday dance, Rythmn [sic] Kings Gents 25 ladies free, had pretty nice crowd. Alvis Roth had a collision, coming out of the Douglas road & didn’t stop, got knocked of machine a total wreck.

Wednesday, Aug. 7, 1935

Baked bread, had chicken dressing. Papa took lawn mower to Fritsche to get it repaired. Evansville church, & Tipton church have pinics [sic] today; & chicken suppers. Loyd Pabst came got sacks, threshing oats today. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary went to Belleville came back here for dinner had chicken. Sure is hot this afternoon & day. Mrs. Emma Altis of St. Louis Mo. died, be buried tomorrow afternoon, she was a Freese, Uncle Fred niece; & Mr. Jim Parker 85 died last nite at 5:30; be buried Fri. morning at Hecker Church & cemetery. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, went along with us to the wake, he looks natural. Koch undertaker, he would be 86 in Sept. Aunt Mary brought plums.

Sunday, June 9, 1935

Penetcost [sic]. We went to Red Bud, first mass, 5 boys were enrolled in to the Sodality. Henry & family were here for dinner supper. This afternoon we went along with him to New Athens & Marrisa, about 3 miles south from there we went & looked at a team 3 yr. old mares; drove them around in the wagon, pretty nice, so he bought them $100 a piece; from Edmond Hodges; came home; got Chris Buehler to get them, Hy went along & got them this evening yet; $4.50 to hauled them down; we went out to Henry’s helped with work; Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came out then to see them. The Hecker priest Fr. Aydt has a bid day, he is 5 yrs. priest, 4 priests had the mass & Fr. Aydt made the sermon; choir from Belleville. The baseball team is playing at New Hanover today.

Thursday, Dec. 27, 1934

Ironed this morning. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were here awhile, he went to Red Bud, with wheat, 92¢. We went out to Henry’s this afternoon, went with his car to E. St. Louis, to Bond Ave. Floyd went along to & Henry drove. We all went to Red Bud, to the pillow slip euchre, but didn’t win any, I had 9 points, still didn’t win, 51 prizes; pillow slips, attendance prize was won by Mr. Ratz. Dr. Paulter son Paul won pillow slips, that were raffled out; the crowd wasn’t so large. There is a euchre in Hecker, also Catholics.
