Baked bread, cookies, cake. Rain all day, no threshing. Henry & family came this evening. Joe Sommers have a little baby girl, has now 4 girls. Papa went fishing in our pond, caught 9, Boy! fish supper.

Friday, June 1, 1934

We cleaned chicken houses & sprayed with coal oil, got load oats. Mr. Ralph Wiegand & Luella Bruns were sponsors last Sun morn. at Smithon [sic] after services for George Kuhn Jr. son, called it Ralph George, she was Emily Wiegand. We baked 2 cherry pies. In the Waterloo paper, it is that Richard Crowe, Uncle Matt boy, went 8 yrs. to the Catholic School, without missing a day or tardy. Lawrence, infant son of Ed. Berge, was operated on in St. Mary’s hospital, & reports, he is now at home & improving nicely. The transfer of Ida Mueller to Fred Faust is in today. Ida Sommers place. Rev. Eschman is taking treatments in St. Mary’s Hospital. Fred Henke had misfortune of having 2 ribs cracked last Sat. on a fall on a runaway team. There is a truck & put up a tent on the city lot, here & is having moving picture show, for 3 nights, & vaudville [sic], Adm. 20¢. The Farm Bureau is having free movie at Pautlers farm tonite. Berti was at Eliza Boll’s got 25 plants of sweet potatoes for Uncle Fred; they came up to plant them out this eve.

Olivia Laut’s birthday. We cleaned little chick house. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were up. Pap got a money order from Ettling $5.60 – 1933 is all paid now. We got the Watterloo Republican, a piece of it today. I guess on account of the corn & hog contract, it is in there, & also in the Times. Mrs. Hy. Wedel was granted a divorce, & settlement was made the amount $875.00. Mrs. Pretzilk got no divorce. Several from Renault are having there farms leased for oil drilling, Mary May is one. Wm. Reheis of Burksville is putting up a new store on his premises; Osterhage has the contract. Mr. & Mrs. Fred Fauss of Burksville bought a house in Waterloo from Fred Mueller, one of Ida Sommer’s & will move in near future, will have sale tomorrow. Cyril Havey is recovering from an operation on appendix in the new St. Louis University Hospital, he took ill suddenly & was operated on next day; also Mrs. Arstice Whiel is recovering from an operation.

Monday, Jan. 22, 1934

George Wagner & Hy. Armstutz got hog this morn. Miss Ida Sommer 26 yrs. old died of inflamatory rheumatism will be buried this afternoon at Waterloo, she is Fred Miller’s & uncle, only near relative, she has several houses, made a will about 2 weeks before she died. Steve Rennecker, was over to see if he could get a hog for Louis Dehn; he wants to butcher tomorrow, got our larrd. Gus Eocler of Wallace St. Louis Mo. was here on business for Uncle Fred, he bought the Coldwell Place, near Burksville. It sure did rain & hail as large a moth boll this morn, & sun shine the rest of the day. Miss Josie Keller, wen to Ben Heyl’s for the rest of the week there. Mr. Henry Hecke of Red Bud is being buried tomorrow afternoon in Round Prairie Cemetery. Pop went to Meng’s.

Friday, Feb. 17, 1933

Papa hauled wood. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came here & from here they went out to watch the men work on the bridge. Jake Neff came this evening & paid for his hog. Mr. Frank Metzger died Wed. & buried tomorrow afternoon. Father Moneghan of Tiptown was trafered [sic] to Carmi Ill. & Rev. Traynor from there was sent to Tiptown. Harold Krumpke celebrated his birthday by giving a dance last Sun. night, at Burksville Station. The dance at Fahey residence last Sat. nite was fairly well attended. Hugo Probst was surprised last Thurs. nite & his friends gathered to celebrate his 27th birthday. John Herman suffereed a light stroke last Sun. morning. Mrs. William Koch of Coxeyville fell & fractured her hip & was taken to Clements Hospital at Red Bud. Dr. N. B. Paulter purchased the Chester Knitting Mill property in Waterloo for $5,000, to pack & storage quarters for the fruit rasied [sic – raised] on the Pautlert farms. Joe Sommer’s called there baby girl Laverne Francis, & A. R. E. Gaven got the free hair cut for selecting the right name.

Friday, Feb. 3, 1933

Rosalia & Bertille went to church this morning. Robert Laut was here & bought that little spring chicken 2 lbs. 25¢. It is a pretty nice day. Bertille got the mail. Papa & Rosalia went out to Henry’s, he wants to take the fence out along the road. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary wasn’t at the wake last night, Jerome Cortner had invited them to a birthday party some place; so they are going to the wake tonite. Joe Sommer’s the barber have another little baby girl born Jan. 29 at St. Clement’s Hospital at Red Bud. Joe is giving a free haircut to the one that selects the right name to be given to the child. Mr. Erwin Eichelmann, son of Mr. & Mrs. Eichelmann & Mrs. Olga Hauptfleisch of Columbia were quitely [sic] married at Springfield Ill. on Wed. Jan. 25. They are making there home with the groom’s parents, east of Waterloo. Walter Monike of Lords Corner motored to Prairie Du Rocher last Wed. evening & received 3 prize on playing violin. John Hepp who has been down for the past 3 weeks with kidney trouble is reported about in the same condition. Mrs. Walter Hecke is employed as nurse. Wm. Laut is no better, he is troubled with Rheumatism. There was a man here wanted to sell the St. Louis Globe & one here wanted boarding place, he is the constructor for building the bridge west of Hecker, he says, going to start next Mon. & wanted a room. Rosalia & Bertille went to see Angela Eichenseer this evening, it was also Mrs. Vic birthday, Clarence Wittenauer was also there, we played pinochle, papa came over & got us when the store was closed.

It rained a good April shower last night about 11 o’clock.  Bertille got the mail this morning.  Walter Wittenauer’s have a little baby girl they now have 5 children.  Joe Sommer’s of Waterloo have a little baby girl was born on Frid. Apr. 10 & baptized Sun. afternoon by Fr. Eschman, named Norene Elizabeth.  Mr. & Mrs. Henry Miller of Lord’s Corner who have adopted a orphan boy, was surprised last week when the boy was missing.  The Sheriff Gaven & his Deputy Schenider where called but when they reached there the boy had arrived again.  The play given by the Broad Hollow School last Sat. night was a grand success.  The dance music was furnished by Karl Boll, Ralph Rausch, Marcella Ettling.  There is to be a private Calico hop there next Sat. night.  The music to be furnished by the Skaer’s bros. of Floraville.  There was a man here & wanted to sell matches 6 boxes for 25¢ & 3 bars soap for 25¢.  We didn’t buy any because its the same as store price.  Papa was over by Steve Rennecker’s a while this evening.

We all went early this morning to church.  The priest passed Miss Stella Roscow by this morning at the communion railing.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were here for dinner and breakfast.  This afternoon we all went into Belleville.  We got some cook pots.  Rosalia went and got the mail.  This evening Papa, Rosalia, Bertille, Uncle Fred, Aunt Mary, Henry & family went up to Uncle Adam’s & Emil’s.  I have seen in the Waterloo Times that Miss Ida Sommer & two girl friends from Columbia motored to Louisville, Kentucky, where they will spend a week seeing many points of interest such as Mammoth Cave, Lincoln’s birthplace at Hodgenville, Ky., The Old Kentucky home of Bardstown & Camp Knox.  They expect to return home Sat.  Also Miss Marie Kolmer and Louise Dalkert left Sat. for a tour of the west.  Their stops will include Denver, Colorado Springs, Estes & Yellowstone parks.  They will be gone about 2 weeks.  A 8 lb. baby girl was born to Mr. & Mrs. Geo. Strattman, the shoe man, at St. Mary’s Hospital, East St. Louis, Monday morning.  They now have a pair.  On August 9, Miss Alice Hoffman became the bride of Mr. Roy Bohres of St. Louis.
