Lot cars passing with priests & Bischoff [sic – Bishop] to celebrate 50th Golden Jubilee of Fr. Van Dieft at Praire [sic] Du Rocher today; being 50 yrs. in priesthood. Raining mostly all day. Bill [Klein] stopped in on way going to Belleville. Man here cleaning out wells & cisterns, wanted $3. clean well so we didn’t have it done yet. Cleaned basement & garden. Rita Braun while coming home from work at Vera’s Tavern & riding with another girl, stepped from car while going & was injured face & shoulder was taken to East St. Louis Hospital. German Band played no. for Wagner Twins, he said. Charles & Melvin birthday.

Bert [Bertille] washed, ironed. Rained a little this eve. Radio says snow. Ziebold man was here trying to sell electric things. Nobbes man Johnson was here looked at horse; some fellows from Prairie Du Rocher looked at black team. We found 95 eggs. still 15 [cents] at Eichenseers. Cold to be 30 tonite.

Wednesday, March 31, 1937

Bert started cleaning house, 2 rooms upstairs. Pap got load wood in basement, with the mule, works good. Went out on business this afternoon to Rocher. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary & Bert went to the euchre in school hall won nothing; had 7 points & a quilt attendance prize to Joe Mauer & lotto prize to John Griffin pretty nice crowd, but not as long as others times. Rob. Laut was here looked for potatoe [sic] patch, going to plant a patch here.

Tuesday, May 5, 1936

We worked in garden. McBride from Prairie Du Rocher came & brought over 2 heifers & sow for $65.00, pap bought from him the other day. We called Dr. Eckert this morning & he says the best thing pap could do is go to the hospital; Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up, this morning, yet; & pap went along in with Dr. this afternoon, & Uncle Fred & Rose went in together, but they came home again; he has room 104 at Belleville Hospital.

Thursday, April 30, 1936

Pap went Praire [sic] Du Rocher to McBride to get a sow. We baked doughnuts, Bert went along to Belleville with Henry & Leona, had to get Floyd’s hand redressed; looks terrible; they had dinner here. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up, lawned & planted cabbage & beans etc; went over to Minnie’s & got her dress finished 25¢ now. We planted 77 cabbage plants, & 87 sweet potatoes; this evening & tomatoes. Beautiful day, warm. Louis Armstutz’s have a big supper at there place tonite, Alumium [sic] cooking ware, there advertising, 2 men & lady from city are doing it, furnished everything; she had to ask 6 couples, Mr & Mrs Milton Wagner, Harry Kammler’s, Hugo Probsts, Lester Gregsons, Joe Wacthels, & themselves; supper to be at 7:30. Eggs 18¢.

Friday, Oct. 11, 1935

Henry came, had lunches & dinner here, finished up sewing wheat today. Leona is still sick, doctor says cold on kidneys. We spaded a piece in back yard; & this afternoon cleaned dining room, washed curtains. Bernice brought the mail; she also had a chain letter if we wanted to try it, making a quilt block, & when your name reaches the top, you will receive 125 blocks, we didn’t try it. Clara Wagner came paid for the lard 16 lbs @ 20¢. Mr & Mrs. Roy Pautler have a 10 lb. baby boy born at Red Bud hospital on Oct. 8, first born. Wm. Huebners have also a baby boy. Wilbur Grossman of Smithon [sic] & lady friend Irene Rayson had a head on collision last Sun. afternoon with Beckmann of Columbia on the Prairie du Rocher; injuries were treated at Red Bud hospital.

Saturday, Sept. 7, 1935

Papa went out to Henry’s, Hempe Bros. were there wanted to buy team mares, but didn’t have the cash; Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary & Bertille went to Marrissa this afternoon to Barbecue pinic [sic] & Homecoming, had a nice program at 1 & 3 o’clock; people were strange they had supper here. All children & adults of Evansville, Prairie Du Rocher, Baldwin, & Hecker were invited over to Sportsman’s Park to see ball game, Adm. 25¢ over 17 yrs. of age, under free, they went with 3 truck loads from here Wittenauer’s, Hills & Eichenseers 25¢ ride, left at 12 & came back 6:15. Henry was up & got the hay rake.

Tuesday, Aug. 20, 1935

We washed, ironed. Ruma has Catholic Church pinic [sic] today. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came & we all left about 5 o’clock went to the pinic [sic], nice crowd in evening, Prairie Du Rocher band. We stopped at Red Bud, bought fruit jars 2 doz; Aunt Mary sold Ja Earle book chances $1.00 for the Hecker Church pinic; on Aug. 28 Fr. Witte wouldn’t take none.

Saturday, July 13, 1935

Papa went up & got Osie Neff to look at the place, were he wanted him to set the engine for threshing, he then went out to Henry’s; worked the mares, work fine, wagon, corn cultivator etc. had lunch out there. We went to Belleville & home by Millsdadt [sic], Waterloo & Red Bud, to see several parties on business. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, stopped a little while, & went to Praire [sic] Du Rocher to Jennette Ronnenberg’s & Fink wedding dance. We went to a free dance at Oak Grove, & nice crowd, Blossom City Boys playing. Oliver Pour has a new car chev.

Thursday, July 11, 1935

Selling apples, 80¢ bu. a guy here, we didn’t take none. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, finished lawning there place. John Reheis is threshing now. Aunt Mary got a card from Jennette Ronnenberg to come to her wedding dance Sat. nite at Praire [sic] Du Rocher don’t say to whom; she should tell Oscar & Larry, A. Rittmeyers, & us.
