Good Friday. 28 degrees; warmer again for today. Went to church 7 o clock. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped in. Pete Hoffmann of near Waterloo died at Querheim Parlor & Mrs. Glessener, Kroll’s sister, passed away to [sic]. Mr. & Mrs. Farbers were here looked at mare. Bert [Bertille] fixed doz. eggs & 9 for A. [Aunt] Mary’s. Went to Red Bud 3 o clock church. heard Fr. Ore Service on radio. Went to Waterloo to see Pete Hoffmann & Mrs. Glessner, they have 3 people laid out, being awful busy all week. Mr. Hill came collected telephone dues. Bert Thompson & family going to move on Weber Farm & Webers moving to New Athens.

Monday, March 20, 1939

Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & pap went to see the O leary place. Bert [Bertille] washed; fried in bacon & sausage, we made garden planted out, onions frost proof plants cabbage 62; pears lettuce, spinach. Pap sewed clover seed. Wittenauer finished sewing oats here. Sure beautiful day 60 [degrees]. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were at Athens got there quilt, this eve came to Hecker, & she & Bert [Bertille] went quilting, Firemen got 2 quilts in again, both plain, peach & green.

Tuesday, March 14, 1939

Baked cookies & pie. Wolferts tuck of Belleville got the heifer $25.00; he had mule, an traded with Gus Blackburn. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came & Bert [Bertille] went along to New Athens to see quilt show; so many beautiful quilts. at Geigers. Went out to see Mrs. Parker for 1/2 hr. Bert [Bertille] went quilting at Firemen’s this eve & nite. Getting colder.

Monday, Feb. 27, 1939

Washed. Pap went to Farmers meeting at school hall with H. Wittenauer this morn. & afternoon with Henry. Ford agent of Waterloo stopped in, thought maybe we want to trade Whip for Model A. Ford he has there now. A fellow & Pierre Laut around selling magzaine [sic] don’t want any. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped in were over at New Athens took a quilt over for show next month. Leona isn’t feeling well up & down has it like Uncle Fred in gall [bladder]; eating to much pork.

Tuesday, Feb. 14, 1939

Valentines Day. Went to Red Bud mass for Pope. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came. Bert [Bertille] went along to New Athens to dentist Dr. Lauter, does pretty good work. Filled 2 teeth for me for $2.00; fixed some for Uncle [Fred] & Aunt [Mary] to $2.00; they went home, came back again this afternoon we went to Belleville, brought clover seed along $2.61 for cleaning 174 lbs. @ 1 1/2 [cents]. Leo & family came this eve. we played 2 games cards etc. Eggs 16 [cents] at one place 15 [cents].

Wednesday, Dec. 7, 1938

Beautiful day; patched, cleaned etc. Went to New Athens, Freeburg, & Smithton. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up, she went to church. Bert [Bertille] won the fruit cake by Mertz.

Saturday, Nov. 19, 1938

Pap went out to Henrys got barrl [? – unclear], ready to butcher, brought 5 lbs. beef along @ 18 [cents]. Went to Waterloo to Horn’s sale bought $1.50 all kind of articles. Leona got 4 chairs Leo & family & Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were all in to. Leo got card to come to surprize [sic] wedding dance of Kettler & Eitzenhoefer on Thanksgiving Day. Thurs. at Dicks Grove by New Athens.

Monday, Oct. 10, 1938

Beautiful day washed ironed. Pap hauled 3 loads wheat to Waterloo got 60 [cents]. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were here this morn. accross [sic] street. We went to New Athens this afternoon, took 2 bus. potatoes we got 40 [cents] trade. made guess on [? – unclear] of Waalows, 25 45 & 15 some people guessed in millions; closes today the contest. Pap payed [sic] L. Matzenbacher for lime dust & hauling & [? – unclear] 15 ton & 60 lbs @ 1.45 – $45.27 that was here & out at Henrys.

Tuesday, Sept. 27, 1938

Bert [Bertille] cleaned front room took of [off] screens. Mr. Watson timber man living on Emil’s place, here on business. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & Bert [Bertille] went to Belleville this afternoon. We went out to Leona’s birthday 28 yrs. old; those present were Mr. Gus Geodelle & family & Dan Geodelle & family, Kate Friedrich, Mr Cleveland & Mrs. Walter & Hilda Reheis & Armie. Adolph Klube & family, New Athens, house full; people all night, had 1/8 beer, cake, drinks, musci [sic] etc.

Thursday, Sept. 8, 1938

Awful hot day; no breeze. Washed, ironed. It rained yesterday at New Athens & Marrissa. but not here. Leo & family came this eve. took tomatoes along green & ripe ones. Levi Gregson, Emil & Noel & Agnes are all out at Clevelands’ tonite eating watermelons. Levi took bucket ripe tomatoes along home. They have devotion for 3 nites here starting tonite till Sat. eve at tridium for happenings at London which is going to take place soon.
