Washed, ironed. pap hauled load gravel. Went to Orlets this afternoon, got grapes for wine & juice. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were here. H. Wittenauer was here on business. Mr. Rudy Helfrich 25 & Otillia Rheinhardt 25 were married at Paderborn this morn. by Fr. Weskamp, attendants were Emil Helfrich & Virginia Helfrich, Oppertunia Rheinhardt & Wm. Helfrich boy of Belleville, dance at Kammlers, nice crowd had cake. Schoenborn’s Orch. Beautiful day.

Friday, Aug. 5, 1938

Rained a little. Cooking catsup etc. Pap hauling a load rock for drive way. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up, she helped clean dishes for the pinic [sic] on the 10. next week; he cut lawn here. Mr. Geo. Weinhoff of Waterloo was married to Weilbacher at Millsdadt [sic – Millstadt] Miss Elnora – bridesmaid & Milton Weilbacher best man. Wm. Weber & Mary Qurin of Smithton married at St. Therasa [sic – Theresa] at Belleville, priest house, attendanted [sic] by brother & sister. she was formerly at Ruma Convent to be a nun till yr. ago, going to live at Smithton were he runs service Station there. Leo & family got plow share. Received our books from Fr. Spors, there is 41 prizes for 10 [cents] – 3 – 25 [cents]. got 2 books, 1 is filled.

Tuesday, July 26, 1938

Another warm day. Henry, Robert & Grover came with tractor & combine, got out about 5 bus. seed but its green & tough so they quit; had dinner & lunch here. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up. Edler came on business from St. Louis to see U. [Uncle] Fred. Scheuster, the guy that married Quathammer’s girl were here, looking for money. Harm’s boy married a Quathammer girl to.

Pap went out to Henry’s all day. got 18 bus. [clover seed] out in all now. Leo Kern & Edna Braun were married yesterday at priest’s house at Red Bud; dance last nite. Joe Kern & Louis Cowell’s daughter attendants, bride wore a dark blue dress. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up. Emil was over. Oliver Birkner delivered chick & pig mash. A lady been selling product for orphan children to help them along. Awful hot this afternoon.

Pap went out to Henry’s. Martha Boll is getting married this afternoon in St. Louis to a divorced man, supper out here at Boll’s for sisters & brothers. Myrtle Whiteside her bridesmaid. We went to Smithton to church & went to Leo’s, awhile, rained this eve.

Sunday, June 19, 1938

We all had dinner here today. Mrs. Ralph Prediger, nee Ethel Parker was operated for appendix Mon. of last week. Elmer Probst & Lorretta Kraft married today; wedding dance tonite at Brezzy Hill. Arthur Cowell’s boy was married Fri; dance at Log Cabin. Clara Wagner & Mrs. Joe Watchel came to see the baby [Rosalia’s baby – Marita Orlet] this morn. Mr. Geo Haudrich & Elmer came Sat. got the mare $135, for Elmer.

Bert [Bertille] came home this eve & tomorrow, going back [to sister Rosalia’s house] again. Noel Roscow & Agnes Gregson getting married tomorrow. Mr. & Mrs. Lester Gregson best.

Ralph Prediger & Ethel Parker were married here, Paul & Agnes Parker attendants; dance at Daab’s Club House, had no invitation.

Bert’s [Bertille] at Leo’s all this while; for 3 weeks so far. Edwin Neff & Amelia Dintelman got married Decoration Day. May 30. Catholic School children have pinic [sic]; Mrs. Jake Friedrich had sale June 4.

June 1, Elmer Haudrich & Edna Watchel were married here, attendants Cyril & Leroy Haudrich, Mildred Watchel & Lorretta Biffar; wedding dance at Kammlers Hall, Neffs dance also was there. Mr. Fritsche of here died. Mr. Jake Mehrmann had a stroke on going home from Haudrichs wedding dance & died; buried June 5. Rob. Knabe big barn burned to ground Sun. eve. June 5; 2 fire department Hecker, & Smithton were out; saved the out buildings house etc.

Thursday, April 28, 1938

Nice cool day, little rain this morn; we went to Leo’s, planted beets, had lunch & went to Belleville from there; Bert [Bertille] got new oxfords white, etc. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up this afternoon; brought cabbage plants, we have now; 112 in truck patch. Received a card to pay $7.00 for tornado Ins. Eggs are 16 [cents] today. Edward Kuess & Verniece Rausch 17 marriage license, were in paper today.
