Cloudy again today. We cleaned chicken house; painted chairs for Marita, had piegeon [sic] for supper. The Christmas card I send to Ed. McDermott at Washington D.C. came back unclaimed, it sure is funny it came back. Klotz’s family & Wagner’s family all got vaccinated for small pox.

Saturday, Dec. 17, 1938

Nice day. Fixed tree stand etc. Renneckers called this eve. to come over for a solo game. Lester Gregson Emil & Steve & pap played & Olive & Bertille & Gus & Katie Klotz played 6 hand pinochle, breaking up even. Gregson boys & Klotz’s girls played games. Served were 5 cookies & apples.

Monday, Sept. 26, 1938

Bert [Bertille] washed, ironed, pretty warm again today. Pap took Whip to Probsts to get it repaired. Sausage was all sold out last nite. This afternoon the guys that destroyed the Vera’s property last Sun. nite; are called to Belleville to Justice of Peace office, 11 boys had to pay $100 for property damage. Emil came over awhile this eve. Klotz & Rheineckers went to Cleavelands eating watermelons.

Pap went to Henry’s, all day. Wittenauer made hay here. Leona came after sacks this afternoon. Wheat is 65 [cents]. Nearly everybody started threshing today. Geo. Schillings, Nic Hess; Cortners run. Frischkorns. Klotz starts Sat.

Friday, Jan. 21, 1938

Pap went to Red Bud took 443 lbs. clover seed to Schrieber’s. for 8 1/2 [cents]. Melvin Wagner has the measles, got a sign up, Osies Neff’s, Weigands, Geodelle’s, Klotz’s kids all have them now. Bert [Bertille] send an order to Chicago Mail Or; one to Si & Freckles at Quincy, describing Hecker; one to Ohio to a Oxydol Advertisment [sic]. A fellow here to see about clover seed again. Myrtle Neff is pretty sick.

Tuesday, Jan. 11, 1938

Cloudy, raining tonite. Washed, scrubbed basement, etc. Pap went to Hecker got inner tube for Chev. tire. A guy here yesterday eve. wanting clover seed didn’t sell none yet. Rennecker’s & Klotz girls & Emil, came, we played 1 game pinochle, then Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came, then we played 6 hand then Alois Roth & Gertie Cortner came yet, so then pap, Emil, Steve & Alois played solo, rest played pinochle, Gertie took my wreath along what Bert [Bertille] had, when Rose [Rosalia] got married. Viola wanted to borrow it, Alois & Gertie getting married next mo.

Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1937

Foggy day again. Bert [Bertille] washed. Emil came over awhile this morn. Pap & him walked up to Frank Emery’s funeral this afternoon 2 o’clock services at house; then to city cemetery, he was 63 yrs. of age. had been ruptured some time ago; Pallbearers were Vic Eichenseer, Jac. Neff, Steve Rennecker, Oscar Klotz, Adolph Lother, Bill Fritsche. Wagner boy’s came got 4 doz. eggs for Mehrmann 25 [cents] today. Mrs. Bill Kaiser was taken to hospital in ambulance yesterday, double pneumonia, for 6 days; had Dr. Frein & nurse out yesterday also. Mr. Martin Fritsche here in town also has double pneumonia; so much sickness around & real weather for it to. Miss Kate McDermott who was making her home in St. Louis past while, suffered stroke Sun. morn, was taken to Red Bud hospital, were there she died, will be buried tomorrow morn, at Tipton church & cemetery at Koch [? – unclear]. Wagner’s family came this eve; we play 7 games pinochle, ladies winning every game.

Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1937

Send cards, etc. Beautiful day. Decorated etc. scrubbed front porch. Arlene Klotz is sick in bed with cold as Renneckers, quite few people have measles they say at Red Bed & Mayben Picketts school will be closed, on that account. The Catholic school children have there program & Santa Claus tonite. There is no school Picketss girls have the measles at present.

Thursday, Aug. 26, 1937

Cloudy this morn. We went to Belleville dentist have to come back again Mon. morn. Chas. Mueth & son John stopped in picked bu. peaches; they had been at Red Bud got pigs. Katie Klotz was here wanted peaches, we didn’t have none picked for here, to green for her anyway. We went to Leo helped him put his cider barrel down in cellar, he got it made today at Kreb’s. Jake helped to; we all had supper there. We brought Leo & Rose along home, when we got here U. [Uncle] Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up but they went home soon, we got ready took Leo’s car when to Waterloo to free show given by Waterloo Auto Co. at Capital Teathre [sic – Theatre] was pretty nice, they took there machine home, & have the Whip. up there to Jake might use it tomorrow made cider; we took Jake some peaches & muschmelons [sic]; also took basket peaches along to Smithton for Orlets; when we went to Belleville this morn.

Nice cool morning; awful wet. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came this eve. going to thresh oats tomorrow afternoon. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stopped in, on the way home from Buehler’s threshing, going to thresh wheat here tomorrow, Klotz broke something on the machine, have to get it rejoined this eve.
