Went to church. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stop awhile. We were home all day & night. Advent starts today. Mr. Kenneth Kemp & mother returned home last week, from a few days visit with there daughter & sister, Meredit at Texas, by motor.
Sunday, Oct. 21, 1934
Mission Sun. We went to 6:30 mass at the Catherdal [sic] at Belleville. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary had lunch here then went home. The Ladies of Hecker parish had meeting this afternoon & going to give a turkey supper on Thanksgiving Day. We went out on a trip this afternoon, to Waterloo, down the American Botton, along the river, stopped at Fort Chartres & home through Red Bud. Went out to Henry’s, stoped [sic] in, Walter & Miss Kluber & Adelle were there. We went to Uncle Adam’s & Emil, Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary went to. Ed & Carrie Brand are here from Alabama, came Fri. afternoon on a surprize to all. Ed is awful stout, just 5 yr. ago sine [sic – since] there were here together. Alice & Lucille are by Kemp’s now, they will leave Thurs.

We made pear preserves canned 2½ pickles. Raining this morning Delmar Watchel’s birthday 3 yr. There is 4 kids going to Blackburn School so far, Robert, 3 yr. & Floyd & Wilkerson, Scrivener, on Pautlers place rides down, with the teacher every day, she brings them all home; Mrs. Kruse is the teacher, lived at Burksville. Mrs. Alice Brand & Lucille left from California Sun. & arrived in Waterloo at 11 o’clock Tues. night, were Kenneth Kemp got them, that is were they are making there home & then go around, see all the folks; was by Uncle Adam’s today.

We washed, ironed. Oscar Klotz was here, to see if we wanted to buy corn. Klotz has some to sell; for 40¢ bu., but we got ours now. Mr. Hill was here gathering news for the paper. It is an awful nice day, warm. Josie Keller is spending, Sun. & Mon. at Ben Heyl’s & Tues. at Triveollers at Red Bud, then she is going back home again. Kenneth Kemp got a new coupe Pontiac cars. We sawed wood this afternoon. Henry, Cleveland, Emil. Uncle Fred helped. Aunt Mary stayed here, we put her quilt in the frame across the street, they had supper here, then we played 5 hand pinochle.

Uncle Fred, Aunt Mary came here then they went to Buehlers. They came back this evening, & took us along to Blackburn’s SchoolHouse, had hallowen [sic] program, the children had & teacher Miss Burgess served lemonade, & people brought cake, pie, dougnuts [sic], & then lunch was served, to the following – Mr & Mrs. Cleveland, Leona & kids, John & George Henkel, Mrs. Kenneth Kemp, Ivo Rapp, Eunice Blackburn, Hy Ronneberg & family, Bill Sensel’s family, Mrs. Christ Buehler & kids, & us. Miss Blackburn baked a cake & put in it a cloth a pin as a guess, Leona made the right guess, & got a cake soap, hallowen [sic] trick, I say. Ha!

We washed, papa is fixing corn crib. Ralph Ettling was here last Sat., & papa was there Sun, he bought 3 heifers from him for $36.00. Ettling & his family are going to move to St. Louis, in 3 weeks; going to give his horses to Paul Neff to work, cows to Stoval & hogs to Mo. Rosalia & Bertille went to Mamies, then we all went to the school hall to a dairy show & speaking given by St. Louis Dairy, had Ed Parkers barn pictured. The hallways just crowded, people from Red Bud, Smithon [sic] & all over. Mr. Taylor, & Dr. McCullen where speakers; inspector of milk of health department. Kenneth Kemps birthday, & a bunch went out to celebrate with dance & beer.
Monday, Aug. 7, 1933
We all went out to Henry’s, & papa went back home, we washed, ironed. Mrs. Cleveland came awhile in the afternoon. It rained a little. Henry brought me home as far as Kemp’s, couldn’t get through the hills no more so I called up home from there & papa got me & Rob. Papa helped Uncle Fred put on a new roof on chicken house, he had lunch, dinner, & lunch, I & Rob, had lunch there. We went to Red Bud took 4 chickens, 12 lbs. & a cake along for the church pinic [sic] tomorrow. Jung stopped got our eggs 10 ¢ doz. Mr. Hill & Spalt & Willie Geodell where all here on business. Spalt to see about telephone lines.

We went out to Uncle Freds for dinner & supper. In the afternoon we all went over to the cemetery, Ed Scheinder family & some relation & Phil & Henry Braun where there they went all through the house & barn, so did we. Scheinder is going to rent the place. We went to Uncle Adam’s & Aunt Mary & Uncle Fred rode along with us there this evening. Jonny Kreher’s sure must of had some dance the other night. Frank Birkner was so drunk. Isadore Helfrich was going to take them home she was no better, he run up the lumber pile; so Henry Spalt took them home. Last Sat, Krehres [sic] & Kemp where cutting a tree down between the hills & it fell the wrong way & smashed the top in on George Wiegands machine & another one yet.

It rained last night & nearly all day. Bertille called up all around see how everybody was. There all in bed at Henry’s except Bobby. Mrs. Geodelle is out there. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary is about the same yet. Dr. Schmidt from Red Bud was up at Hill’s this morning, they are both awful hoarse. Papa got the papers went it stopped raining, isn’t much in it, thought that a few got paid for there land for the hard road on Route 156 from Waterloo to Hecker. Mary J. Kemp got $26.00. Jennie Kemp heirs $82.00. Bessie Parker $225.00. Leslie Wilkinson $57.50, don’t know how it is they all got paid, & guess wouldn’t give. Mr. & Mrs. Wm. Heumer of St. Louis have a baby girl born Dec. 27 Tues. 8 lb. 14 ozs. she was formerly Minnie Geodelle, Gus’ sister. Arthur Stiehl cut his hand pretty bad, they had to take him to the doctor.

We all went out Henry’s butchering today. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary, Emil & Mr. & Mrs. Gus Geodelle where all there. We couldn’t get the Whippet started to go home, cranked & put hot water on, but it wouldn’t go, so Uncle Fred pulled us till to the hills but, then it wouldn’t go up, his wheels started spinning still, so Adolp [sic – Adoph?] Petri & his wife came along, they both helped to push, but still didn’t go, so we put chains on Uncle Freds machine & then it went up right away, till we got by Kemp’s the Whip started then Uncle Fred turned around & went home, & it worked all right coming home. The people that lived on Hirst’s place where out there trying to to sell apples. Leona bought a peck, $1.00 bus, they where bruised & fallen.
