Papa got crushing done this morn. this afternoon him & Bertille went to Wm. Sheets sale, but didn’t buy anything. Greg. McCarthy the Hecker school teacher quite [sic – quit] his term here, & received his full pay, the directors where going to fire him, school was supposed to be out Apr. 29, but now I guess it’ out already. Wm. Harbaugh’s boy is in Red Bud hospital got operated for appendix. He is about 4 yrs. old. It was already bust open when he got there.

Friday, August 28, 1931

Henry finished plowing with the tractor this afternoon up here, he had lunch then left for home & left the team & wagon here.  Rosalia dyed her dress wine colored & washed the green one.  Adolph Rittmeyer’s wife is awful bad sick, she has rhemutaism [sic] of the heart & diabetes, they also have a nurse there.  Mrs. Ben Rausch is on the sick list.  Hecker’s ball players had a lucky day last Sun, the first team played at New Athens scored 6 to 3.  The Juniors played Smithon [sic] here & scored 10 to 9, Hecker winning both games.  William Birkner is erecting a furnace in his dwelling.  This week is State Fair at Springfield, quite a few from here attended.  The Hecker Public School will open on Sept 1, Greg McCarthy teacher.  The Misses Frances, Martha Schilling returned home Aug. 20 after an extended tour through the northwestern states.  John Eschman of Waterloo passed away suddenly Wed morning Aug. 26 at 1 o’clock.

We all went out to Henry’s this afternoon.  Papa & Henry started building the milk house.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here but there was nobody at home.  They came back again this evening a little while before they went to Elmer Parker’s birthday dance, we where not invited, Mrs. Blackburn told them to come.  Bertille got the mail today.  In the Waterloo Times it was that Jac. Schaefers have a little baby girl.  The Misses Rose & Alice Harbough went to Mc’ellester Oklomoa [McAlester, Oklahoma] to visit there sister Elenora.  Ed Meng sold his 85 acre farm on Richland Creek last Sat.  Henry Kleber of Floraville was the buyer, at about $40. an acre.  The Hecker bank was appraised last Sat. morning, the lot & building at $1200, & fixtures $650, Albert Gardner, Emil Hartman, H.M. Hill where the appraisers.  There was Central Examination held last Sat. in Hecker Public School by Mr. McCarthy & various schools in Prairie Du Long the teachers present where, Miss Gladys Hull, Miss Hilda Wihelms.  Last Friday Mrs. Dan Mendel the barbers wife was taken to E. St. Louis to the hospital for treatment.  The John McCarthy farm was sold at Master’s sale last Sat.  Dr. N.B. Pautler Dr. for $2500.  We had lunch out at Henry’s today.

Friday, Dec. 26, 1930

This morning we all went to church.  The Eichenseer’s kids were all here this morning.  Harold, Cyril, Clarence, Lucinda.  Them boys all got pocket knifes for Christmas from Santa Claus.  Today Bill Freund was here for dinner, he brought Rosalia & Bertille each a scarf for a Christmas present.  Rosalia got the mail this morning.  I seen in the papers that Al Geodelle of Waterloo have a little girl.  Mr. McCarthy teacher of the Hecker Public School had a Christmas Program & also Santa Claus was there, he received many beautiful present, powder, perfume, shaving outfit from the school children, & he presented them each with a bag of candy.  School is closed now till Monday, Jan. 5 1931.  The author Mr. Harris, of the piece “After the Ball” passed away at the age of 65, I seen in the paper.
