Made 28 bottles catsup; got 81 so far. Picked 5 bus. peaches. Bert Thompson got 1 bu. Al. Rausch brought a letter here from Rose [Rosalia]. Eichenseer got 2 bus. peaches for Walter Pour; took them to store. The Catholic Church pinic [sic] at Waterloo today. Lester Gregson came to see about hauling lime dust, but he takes not less than 50¢, thats high. Gypsy Joe sang a piece for Mrs. L. Matthews & Arlene, Mr & Mrs. Shloemmer requested by Mrs. Jake Geodelle. Pretty hot 91° degrees. Pap paid electric bill 5 hrs. this mon. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came here. Leo & Rose came, we all went to Waterloo Catholic church pinic [sic] nice crowd. Waterloo band & St. Peter & Paul’s Orchestra sure nice.

Monday, Aug. 16, 1937

Canned 5 qts. peaches, 1 tomatoes, cooked catsup. Pap went to Waterloo to get fruit jars; didn’t have them in yet, he stayed all morn. still didn’t come, he is going to deliver them tomorrow. Berniece came said, there was some fish left, if anybody wanted some, at Mertz’s on ice; we don’t want any today. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came this afternoon, he helped put up stands, got 5 chickens – 12 lbs. @ 19¢ for pinic [sic] tomorrow; had watermelon lunch. Nic Schaefer Jr. was here, stopped on way home from Hess sale at Ruma. Gypsy Joe sang song for Mrs. Hess by Agnes today.

Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1937

Washed, ironed, patched, canned 5 qts peaches. Its awful hot this afternoon. Hy Birkner’s – Glenn had a song sung for him today, birthday is Sat; was requested by a friend from Belleville, on Gypsy Joes program. At Oscar’s moving yesterday they had 2 kegs beer & case root beer. At the Tipton pinic [sic], $100 – went to a fellow from Joulit [Joliet?] $35 to Dorthy Burkhardt, at Red Bud. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came we went along to Red Bud church pinic [sic], had supper there – 50¢; lots chicken, was pretty good supper, nice crowd. The quilt that was raffled was won by Norbert Seifert, pillow slips to Perryville Mo; center piece to Kaffoi. Stella Roscow won a beautiful quilt playing bluey, & Ben Mudd, from St. Louis, won 2 at bluey stand, sure some luck, they also played for cash, & pillow slips; we didn’t win a thing.

Thursday, May 20, 1937

We paint chicken house etc. Pierre got milk. We planted 53 cabbage plants. Oscar Birkner have 18 mons. Muriel’s picture taken at Belleville Studio it is in the paper, also Jerome Cortner’s girl’s picture to be 2 yrs old in Aug. 31. Gypsy Joe sang a song for Lorraine Cortner by Ray Neff.

Monday, Aug. 31, 1936

We washed, ironed. Joe Griffin finished today. Pap got load corn fodder. Mr. & Mrs. Jerome Cortner had Gypsy Joe to play “Red Sails in Sunset” for there baby 1 yr. old today Ethel May. Mildred Watchel & Berneice Wagner was here, she is news reporter for Niece Rausch, for Daily Advocate, neice [sic] is working at Clara’s in New Athens now.
