Cut lawn, etc. Pap went to Red Bud took cement back; we went to Belleville this afternoon dentist. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were here, cutting lawn etc. Clif Staheleber is 21 yrs. old today, says he is going to get drunk tonite, no matter what it costs, some ideas for 21 yr. old lad. Went out to Geo Schilling’s was going to pay lumber sawing, but he hasn’t got it figured out yet; seen the doll dressed in $1. with $25.00 sure looks beautiful, ribbon band with $1. shoes & hand bag, pleated dress of $1. bills; she got it from Indiana, stopped at Clevelands paid saw sharpening; went looked at oats & berries.

Sunday, Sept. 8, 1935

Went to Red Bud. Out to Uncle Fred’s dinner & supper. It rained a nice shower. Joe Griffin was annouced [sic] for 3rd time but the wedding was postponed, Mrs. Griffin is very low at present. Pete Kaiser had a head on collision car is total wreck, last Sun. at Belleville, 5 persons, were all taken to the hospital, he didn’t know nothing for 2 hrs. had a fractured skull; but is pretty good now. Holy Name Conference for men at Trenton today. We went to Paderborn to Totch’s to a free dance; & Boy! it started in to rain. Oh My!! the crowd started to leave, sure did have a crowd. Schoenborn & Schaefer played musci [sic]. Totsch’s served hot rump corn beef sandwiches. Kraemer & boys of Millsdadt, were going to fight, a constable made order, quite a few were feeling good. Geo. Mueth fell down outside, long as he was.

Saturday, Jan. 20, 1934

Papa got crushing done. Ben Schilling brought clover seed. Geodelle the bread man stops here now. We went to Bellville [sic] this afternoon. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary & Josie were butchering by Adam Eckerts, stop in on there way home. This evening went out to Uncle Fred’s took them all along & went to Hy. Ronnenberg to Luella’s 18 yrs. old birthday, & what a time, musci [sic] was furnished by Birkner’s, & Evansville boy’s, Kaemper & Wunderlich, with guitar & violin. Beer, wine, root beer & chicken soup; it sure was good; Evansville people Jerry Kissel & his wife had a quarrel, & also his daughter & her husband, all were feeling good; lots to drink. We came home about 2:30 this morn.

We went out to Uncle Freds for dinner & supper. In the afternoon we all went over to the cemetery, Ed Scheinder family & some relation & Phil & Henry Braun where there they went all through the house & barn, so did we. Scheinder is going to rent the place. We went to Uncle Adam’s & Aunt Mary & Uncle Fred rode along with us there this evening. Jonny Kreher’s sure must of had some dance the other night. Frank Birkner was so drunk. Isadore Helfrich was going to take them home she was no better, he run up the lumber pile; so Henry Spalt took them home. Last Sat, Krehres [sic] & Kemp where cutting a tree down between the hills & it fell the wrong way & smashed the top in on George Wiegands machine & another one yet.

Monday, May 30, 1932

Decoration Day. Church Pinic [sic] in Alten [sic – Alton] & here in Hecker, & school pinic [sic] at Waterloo. Hy. Armstutuz was here this morn. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here helping to make hay, they & Hy. Meng had dinner, he helped too. This afternoon Uncle Fred took Aunt Mary up to the pinic [sic], & her stuff but no chickens, then he came back & helped finish with the hay, they had lunch here, Uncle Fred ate supper with us, then went down to Red Bud to drug store. There where so many people at the pinic [sic], they didn’t have enough chicken, 30 people went down, didn’t eat no supper, had to wait to long till the chicken was all fryed [sic]. This evening we all went out Henry Birkner’s, Mary’s birthday, had a dance out there. Lip. Meuth & 3 other fellows where here & they looked at the colts, drunk as could be, they where out all nite at a dance at Fahey’s. eggs 7ยข today.
