We washed, ironed. Joe Griffin finished today. Pap got load corn fodder. Mr. & Mrs. Jerome Cortner had Gypsy Joe to play “Red Sails in Sunset” for there baby 1 yr. old today Ethel May. Mildred Watchel & Berneice Wagner was here, she is news reporter for Niece Rausch, for Daily Advocate, neice [sic] is working at Clara’s in New Athens now.

Monday, March 4, 1935

We washed, ironed, awful wind; made little garden. Henry & Albert Cleveland, were here for dinner, sewed oats, rained, after dinner, so they had to quite [sic – quit]. Mr. Stehl butcher of Smithon [sic] stopped here. They Daily Advocate man of Belleville, was here, to sell paper. Comes in on the bus, in the evening now. Mr. Zipfel of Lurlhs [?] Hatchery of Red Bud called over chicken this afternoon, put out 18, we have 106 layers now; Eggs are 19¢ today. Ed. Brand’s birthday.

Tuesday, Oct. 25, 1932

It is cloudy, & raining all day. Bertille went over to Rennecker’s got the papers. See in there Daily Advocate that Robert Groom Jr. & Mary Louis Sterling where married at Carlinville on July 31, it was kept a secret till now. Mr. Groom is going to a miner School in St. Louis, when he has finished that they will make there home with Mr. & Mrs. Bob Groom West A St. Belleville. It is also in the paper that Fr. Grootens has paroled 2 boy out of jail, Chas. Burke the first one he had here & Tackett both of Belleville, they held up a filling station.

Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1932

Papa was up at Osie Neff’s today to see wether [sic] it would suit to measure his road & stacked it off, but it dosn’t [sic] suit him. Gustv Dudenhoeffer was out at Pete Reheis all last week. There is so much sickness going around again. Mr. Hill had wooping [sic] cough & Willis Harbaugh children, Henry Birkners & Frank Birkners & Oscar’s kids are sick, Ed Cortners, Nic Schaefers, Ed Schneiders, kids all got some kind of sickness & lots others yet. John Reageans & Bill Harbaughs got the signs on for Scarlet fever. A man was here trying to sell the Daily Advocate paper. Papa went to Waterloo this afternoon. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary & Josie came here, then we all went to the euchre in Kammler’s Hall, Bertille had 8 points & got a bucket. Josie got bobby price [sic – booby prize] a layer cake. Rheinhardts band played for the dance.

Tuesday, April 14, 1931

Today Wm. Curran & Julia Ruby are getting married in St. Patrick’s church Tiptown, & this evening they will have a wedding dance at Oak Grove.  Philip & Bill came out & we went to the dance.  The wedding couple marched around the hall, then they danced a waltz.  Mabel Crook & Olga Bozzay where the attendants.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary went too.  We all went too Waterloo this afternoon to the car sale at Nobbe’s.  Aunt Mary won a prize a dress, cap & anklets given by Clara Siegel.  The dress she got exchanged for a larger one & Rosalia got the cap, & Bertille the socks.  Nelson Kleyer won the old ford coupe that was raffled.  There was a man here this morning selling the Daily Advocate paper.  The insurance man from Horse Prairie was also here.  Victor Eichenseer was here too.  We stopped at Henry’s when we went to Waterloo.  Frank Dudenhoeffers & Margaret & the family where at Uncle Pete’s last Sunday.  She said we should come over to St. Louis next Sunday.  Our little chicks are hatching Sat., so I don’t know if we will go or not but I guess if it don’t rain we will.
