Thursday, Sept. 8, 1938

Awful hot day; no breeze. Washed, ironed. It rained yesterday at New Athens & Marrissa. but not here. Leo & family came this eve. took tomatoes along green & ripe ones. Levi Gregson, Emil & Noel & Agnes are all out at Clevelands’ tonite eating watermelons. Levi took bucket ripe tomatoes along home. They have devotion for 3 nites here starting tonite till Sat. eve at tridium for happenings at London which is going to take place soon.

Thursday, Aug. 11, 1938

Nice cool all day. Pap hauled 2 loads rock. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up, he cut lawn etc. Major Bowes on radio tonite honored city. E. St. Louis. Hy [Henry] brought sack feed down, took 3 chances on Red Bud pinic [sic] prizes. Clara Gregson took 1 this morn. Emil went along with Gus. Blackburns today to Centralia’s yesterday with Clevelands to get peaches. Smithton boys were going around here selling peaches from Centralia for $1. bu. not nice at all.

Tuesday, Aug. 2, 1938

Washed, ironed. Billy’s [Willis] 5 yr. birthday today. Hy. Armstutz came got coop chickens old hens we shipped 24. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary over here. Oscar Goedelle was buried yesterday at Waterloo. We went out to Henry’s Billy’s birthday; had cake & cherry juice. Cleveland’s, Geodelle’s, Orlets families were present, music & singing.

Tuesday, July 26, 1938

Another warm day. Henry, Robert & Grover came with tractor & combine, got out about 5 bus. seed but its green & tough so they quit; had dinner & lunch here. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up. Edler came on business from St. Louis to see U. [Uncle] Fred. Scheuster, the guy that married Quathammer’s girl were here, looking for money. Harm’s boy married a Quathammer girl to.

Tuesday, May 17, 1938

Pap came down, got Bert [Bertille], washed, had to hang it in basement, raining all day; As we were coming home just a little ways on this side of Red Bud Stehlhorns kid was playing out at the road he picked up a rock & hit the glass in our car, & flew all to pieces, we drove to there house, said we should get it fixed at Schriebers, so pap went down again, had it put in, $2. Mrs. Cleveland, Leona & boys went down to hospital this afternoon, today she [Rosalia] can sit up & tomorrow get up & walk around & next day go home Doc said. Bert caned [sic – canned] 2 qts. 2 pts cherries, isn’t all of them yet, just the ripest once [sic – ones] off of a tree. Leo came down stayed all nite at Red Bud.

Tuesday, May 10, 1938

Beautiful day. Pap came to hospital at 10:30 AM. & Bert [Bertille] went home, washed. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up this afternoon. Pap stayed at the hospital all day. Jake Friedrich & wife while on there way to St. Louis to see Bernice Sun., was struck by train by Columbia he lived till 5 o’clock that day & died, & she is in hospital, she had just been home about 3 weeks, been ailing all along; he is at Wagner Funeral Parlor, will be buried tomorrow afternoon. Henry & Leona came & Leo & Bert [Bertille] went along to hospital, boys were at Clevelands, Leona stayed all nite; rest came home, Pap & Bert [Bertille] went to May Devotion.

Thursday, April 21, 1938

Nice day, warm. Cooked kettle soap. Pap went to Waterloo, with 20 bus. wheat @ 72 [cents], yesterday he got 68 [cents]. Price is 75 [cents]; he stopped at Henry’s also. Mrs. Cleveland was there to. Floyd is to get 1 lb. coffee on the Old Judge program by Susie. 3 persons on same song, policeman Song. I didn’t hear it on radio. Otto Geodelle of St. Louis, formerly of Waterloo, is in hospital, shot himself in head, but didn’t kill him, is in hospital. Pap went to see Hy. Feurer; about the signing of corn program. then he went to see Fred Weber by Smithton, about pigs. The Ladies Aid have a card party at Kammler’s tonite; Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came. Bert [Bertille] went along to euchre. Bert [Bertille] got first prize 11 points out of 14 games. got a straw rug, beautiful. Uncle [Fred] had 7 got box cocoa & A. [Aunt] Mary had 7 got napkins; not much of a crowd 7 tables euchre 3 or 4 pinochle, & bluey quite a few; not much at all.

Sunday, Feb. 6, 1938

Raining this morn; for about 1 hr. then after wards, nice sunshine day. Emil was over awhile this morn. We went to mass. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came down for dinner & supper. Cleveland’s family were here this evening, playing solo. Bert [Bertille] went to Wagner’s along with them to Floraville Masquerade Ball, Schmidts Merry Makers musci [sic]. Prizes were won 1st group, 4 girls, Norma Etling; Edna Probst, Elvira Kroft, M. Keim. 2nd prize, dressed a best gent. Mrs. Walter Vogel & Erma Fisher lady. 3rd. Ruth Specinger. 4th. Walter Vogel comic n****r, big crowd; case beer attendance prize. Mueth had an accident this afternoon, at Columbia & Milsdadt [sic] road, car all smashed Phil. & Eddy, Phil wife; they say were hurt bad; Josie had scratches to; but they took her home, but the rest are at St. Mary’s hospital, they were on there way to St. Louis to see Rosie, who was operated on is in hospital; Phil had fractured skull & Ed rib broken. Louis Hofmeister of New Athens fell asleep tonite & ran of left side of hard road up the bank by Al. Parker’s on New Athens hard road; he wasn’t hurt, but car was damaged quite a bit; they say $95. to repair it again.

Saturday, Jan. 29, 1938

Henry stopped in got crushing done. Bert [Bertille] baked cream pie. Rose [Rosalia] brought qt. milk last nite. Mr. John Horn of here died this morn. at 7 o’clock, we seen Quernheim’s come out to get him. Wm. Ganley came on business. We & Emil went out to Henry’s this afternoon. Hess & Cleveland helped yet to cut corn fodder for chop for feed; we had supper there. This eve. we went to Rob. Lauts; Rob & pap lost every game pinochle but 1; had popcorn, coffee cake, wine; seen the plans for Rob’s new house 28 x 32 its going to be. Tonite is Pres. birthday balls some places. Masquerade at Floraville.

Monday, Jan. 17, 1938

Bert [Bertille] washed, ironed. Pap went in woods all day. Cleveland called here, for Emil to the phone, going to fix on there telephone lines today. Levi Gregson came, going to kill the hogs here & take them down in our truck, there was a accident near J. Braun’s this eve; a [unclear] truck & car from St. Louis, had the cop there, & car was taken in the Waterloo road on a wrecker; so far haven’t heard no more of it.
