Baked cookies & pie. Wolferts tuck of Belleville got the heifer $25.00; he had mule, an traded with Gus Blackburn. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came & Bert [Bertille] went along to New Athens to see quilt show; so many beautiful quilts. at Geigers. Went out to see Mrs. Parker for 1/2 hr. Bert [Bertille] went quilting at Firemen’s this eve & nite. Getting colder.

Friday, Aug. 26, 1938

Nice cool day. Pap cut 3 shocks corn has 10 cut now. Then hauled 2 loads wood, put 1 in basement. Henry & family brought 3 sacks potatoes, then went to Gus Blackburn’s school meeting.

Thursday, Aug. 11, 1938

Nice cool all day. Pap hauled 2 loads rock. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up, he cut lawn etc. Major Bowes on radio tonite honored city. E. St. Louis. Hy [Henry] brought sack feed down, took 3 chances on Red Bud pinic [sic] prizes. Clara Gregson took 1 this morn. Emil went along with Gus. Blackburns today to Centralia’s yesterday with Clevelands to get peaches. Smithton boys were going around here selling peaches from Centralia for $1. bu. not nice at all.

Friday, April 29, 1938

Worked garden, cut lawn etc. Harry Wittenauer is plowing, getting ready to plant corn here. Pap went to Waterloo with 19 bu. wheat @ 67 [cents] top price 75 [cents] Eggs 16 [cents]. Pap went to H. Wittenauer’s got 3 pigs $14.00. School pinic [sic] at Blackburn’s today, last day school this year. A lady here selling garments. Seen in Waterloo paper that Geo. Haudrich bought the farm right west of town from Mathilda Lippert & husband of Belleville; Armin Geodelle is now living there. Mr. & Mrs. Jermome AuBuchon of Muryphsboro [sic – Murphysboro] have a baby boy, paper reads; Red Bud.

Sunday, Jan. 30, 1938

Went to mass. Rained heavy last nite, getting colder today, & windy. Bert [Bertille] went to Joe Wacthels this afternoon & Levi & Clara Gregson were here; was by Emil, but he was at Blackburn’s; came over here awhile. Leo & Rose [Rosalia], Jake & Mr. Orlet were here this eve, Jake brought his dad here, & he went along out to Lea’s. Mrs. Orlet is coming home from hospital tomorrow. Pretty cold at 9 o clock was 14 [degrees].

Monday, Sept. 9, 1935

Rain all morning. Yesterday was Mr. Mrs. Joe Neary’s 1st year wedding anniversary. Ida Braun 2 yrs. dead. Bill Vogt & man was here, they went to Blackburn’s, delivered a hog, then went up to Henry’s & looked at the mares. Werner & guy from over by New Athens was here, looking for a drill & other tools, but ours was already sold. Papa was by Renneckers awhile, she gave him some flower slips for us to plant out. Eggs 24¢ today.

Friday, Aug. 9, 1935

Mr. Jim Parker is being buried this morning but none of us can go, we have to go to Henry’s threshing, oats; the grandsons were pallbearers; 3 of Geo Parker’s, & Paul & Clyde Pautler & Hy. Birkner; the daughter, Sister Amada was also home; came Thurs.; it was an awful large funeral. Henry had threshers for dinner & lunch, & supper; moved here about 4 o’clock. Klotz & Watchel machine threshed this & Geo. Schilling moved onto Blackburn’s. Henry threshed altogether 1108 bus; 394 bus. here & 714 out there, highest oats threshed so far; we got for our share 369 bus. Pabsts bought oats 47 bus.

Monday, April 22, 1935

We washed, ironed, patched. Christ Buehler came, got the rest of his chick coops. Chas. Helfrich was here, said he was getting the relief check, now for feed, & it would come in pap’s name, in about 2 weeks, would amount to $16.00. Henry came up, went to Meng’s. Bert Thompson came over with him. Mr. & Mrs. Alf. May were here about 3 hrs; brought Interest for Uncle Fred. Mr. Emil Schaefer & guy that bought the drill, came & got it this afternoon, Schaefer came to look at the binder, they are neighbors, near Foster Pond; the rabbit brought him a little baby boy; Them 2 & May looked at the colt. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, set out cabbage plants 80, we helped. Papa went out to Henry’s this morning, Gus Blackburn is having posts cut for tiles for railroad, & those guys are hauling them out past Ettlings House, some system. We sprayed fruit trees again today. Ambrose Doyle’s baby boy is in Hospital, had 8 lbs. pus taken out from the lungs & rib taken out, to get it out, & the child is getting along fine now, 22 mos. old; doctor had said, it would have died if they didn’t take out the pus, its awful. Mrs. Hy. Miller, has awful trouble to with swallowing, kind of a sickness they claim, goes from one to the other. All the company we had today, it certainly was Easter Mon. Eggs 20¢.

Monday, April 15, 1935

We washed, ironed, & what a day terrible windy & cold, my! clothes freezing stiff on the line, imagine, sun shining. Papa went up town with the eggs; got 21¢. They say there was ice 6 in. last night. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, he spaded his garden, she helped us quilt, Mrs. Rennecker also came over, on a visit, & helped to quilt, so we finished it & took it out of the frames; sure pretty. Cotton Reifscheinder of Belleville, delivered our 2 heifers for $28.00 this afternoon; Papa went to Red Bud to Zipfel & got chic & laying mash. Uncle & Aunt & Rennecker had lunch here; eggs this afternoon 20¢. Mrs. Euler is over in E. St. Louis at St. Mary’s Hospital, she had a tooth pulled, & it never grew shut, must be some kind of a growth or cancer in her mouth, taken there last week, she had extry [sic – x-ray] taken at Red Bud, but they can’t do nothing for her. Mr. Eugene Bruns was removed home Sat, from Belleville hospital & is getting along fairly well. Jonny Henkel bought a seperator [sic], going out threshing this season with tractor. At the School Election, Sat out there Gus Blackburn, was elected director with 14 votes, Fred Reheis 1 Emil 1 vote. Cleveland term was expired. Aunt Mary sent two Easter Greeting, one to Mrs. Ros Winters at Kentucky & told them they were planning on visiting them this summer & also Frank Jermings at Shumay [sic] Ill; I guess they surely will be surprised!

Saturday, Aug. 18, 1934

Henry is plowing. Seen in the Waterloo paper, Slyvester Miller & wife are going to move to St. Louis, gave up his job at the condensery. Rob. Schaefer has his place. Henry had dinner here, finished plowing & went home. Joe McCarthy bought himself a new ford U.S. truck to haul milk, Martin May & Hoffmann new chev’s. Ben Schilling has a new chev. Mr. & Mrs. Ivo Rapp have there wedding celebration & dinner & supper at Blackburn’s; Fr. Aydt had dinner there too.
