Thursday, Oct. 26, 1939

Raining a little. Bill [Klein] stoped [sic] in, he was out selling car. Schwab came this afternoon, had to work a little on Whip. yet. wasn’t working just right. Fellows here from St. Louis, wanted to weather strip our house, would cost $115.00 for every window & door. & $35 for living room & kitchen. Holy Name Society of Red Bud have card party tonite. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came & Bill we all went to Red Bud to euchre, pap didn’t go. Bill had 12 points got 6 glasses. not much prizes. We gave pk. potatoes, wasn’t up for euchre prize.

Wednesday, Oct. 25, 1939

Raining this morn. still warm yet. Pap went to Red Bud paid Fr. Spors $12.00 pew rent, got shoes. etc. Bert [Bertille] cleaned fruit cellar this afternoon. Mrs. Rudy Helfrich nee Otillia [Ottilia] Rheinhardt, was taken to Belleville hospital in ambulance yesterday morn; baby born at home, awful sick after. Bill [Klein] came brought Whip. Mrs. Favre came to get him.

Saturday, Oct. 21, 1939

Pap got haircut. We went to Smithton this afternoon, went out to see Schwal’s pigs. Bill [Klein] came this eve. he was at Ed. Cortner’s to sell him a 1938 Ford; that he traded in to Baltz banker of Smithton for 1940; first trade today. They had a fire in Smithton, weeds, had fire engine called. Geo. Parkers barn on Schilling place burned this afternoon to. also from a weed fire it started; had Hecker fire department out.

Thursday, Oct. 19, 1939

Pap went out to see Henkels. We went to Smithton & then to Leo’s, bought 4 pigs $4.00 pc. Bill [Klein] figured the bill for our Whip; from the accident it was $12.02, we send it to Richards lawyer – Christoph Ins. man. Wittenauer shocked load corn this afternoon. Pap fixed wagon tongue.

Friday, Oct. 13, 1939

Cool. Pap hauled 2 loads wood & for in basement. Bert [Bertille] cleaned bedroom & hall . Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came planted tulips out & Bert [Bertille] helped also scrubbed 2 room floors & cleaned them. Transfer in Waterloo paper of lot of Sophia Kessler to A. Papenberg. Bill [Klein] & Bert [Bertille] went to Paderborn this eve. to Rosary Devotion at church. Leo & family came here this eve. Awful cold tonite going to freeze.

Thursday, Oct. 12, 1939

Columbus Day. Pap hauled 2 loads wood down today. Went to Waterloo this afternoon, got mash etc. Bert [Bertille] baked molasses cookies, cooked catsup. Awful cold tonite. Henry wants to finished with wheat today. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came this eve. he got the broken glass from Emils front door that broke Sun. have another glass put in now.

Sunday, Oct. 8, 1939

Went to Red Bud mass. Emil come over brought paps trousers over, Henry had brought them up, had them cleaned at Waterloo. The front door glass broke over at Emils wind blew door shut; so far isn’t fixed yet. Eichenseers have it here, to large glass. Bill [Klein] & Bert [Bertille] went to Smithton.

Monday, Oct. 2, 1939

Bert [Bertille] washed, ironed, patched. Pap went to Waterloo took radio in to Bersche’s got 1 new tube put in, its better, but doesn’t work right; he went out on business trip this afternoon. Mr. Edler came on business for Uncle Fred. Arch Bischoff [sic – Bishop] Cardinal Mudenlin [sic – Mundelein] was found dead in bed this morn. at 7:30. Some people here selling apples 65 [cents] bu. come from Muryphsboro. Warmer today.

Thursday, Sept. 28, 1939

Bert [Bertille] baked pie. Pap dug all our sweet potatoes, 3 bus. Bert went out to Brand’s this afternoon. Fr. Simon is going around solicting [sic] for Belleville St. Henry’s College, to build some post to it, never came here. Mrs. Joe Schilling is pretty low. St. Everdine is home & all children there, doctor gave up all hopes. Lee Gregson & Vera Schmitz were married at Renault mass this morn; her brother groomsman & Mildren Rist bridesmaid, Lester Chaffeaur, dealers car going to go to Alba. tomorrow. Dan Schmidt of Waterloo & Regina Schoenborn of Belleville were married yesterday afternoon at St. Marys Rectory of Belleville.

Wednesday, Sept. 27, 1939

Leona’s birthday. 29 yrs. Pap hauled 2 loads wood. Bert [Bertille] finished cleaning upstairs. Leona was at Clevelands cooking applebutter. Virgil Eichenseer came got catalogs got a newspaper drive at Cathedral at Belleville at present. Leo & family came this eve. Bill [Klein] came & Bert [Bertille] went along home to his mother to get title for his car, they were going to go to Waterloo, so we came back home again; had watermelon, but wasn’t any good.
