Sunday, Nov. 6, 1938

Went to Red Bud, mass was longer from 7:30 till 9:00. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came, pap went along to Donahue’s, turkey supper, & shooting match; they also went to Phil Mueths shooting match, but didn’t win nothing; Clarence Pabst of Belleville was granted a divorce, Sat. from his wife nee -Irene Voges. Geo. Wihelms. Mrs. Mertz brother died in Belleville hospital of pneumonia. Raining this eve.; a little.

Monday, Oct. 31, 1938

Halloween. Bert [Bertille] washed ironed. Pap went to Red Bud got Chev. fixed, prestove put in, cover on radiator. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came, she went to church. Emil came over, to pay U. [Uncle] Freds rent [? – unclear]. Pap went to Staufenbiel woods. There were a few out walking in town tonite, children no damage.

Saturday, Oct. 29, 1938

Pap got crushing done. O. Birkner delivered 2 sacks feed for hogs & chickens all pellets. Wm. Ganley was here. We went to Hanford’s sale by Martin School House bought nothing. Leo & Rose were there to; May salarger [? – unclear].

Friday, Oct. 28, 1938

Pap went up in woods stopped at Henry’s. He brought load corn, this afternoon, & told us about the fire at Jerome Cortner’s house burned to ground not much saved we didn’t no [sic] nothing about it, happened 12:30. Lorena was at Belleville, at hospital where her mother is a patient, when Jerome got to the house flames were coming out the window they say. Hecker fire department was out.

Saturday, Oct. 22, 1938

Pap got crushing done. We went to Belleville this afternoon to church. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] were also in. Much colder tonite, radio says frost. Had chicken pie for dinner today. Radio is fine tonite very good. Ralph Etting & Marlene Boll came this eve. Etting on business.

Friday, Oct. 21, 1938

Bert [Bertille] baked cookies etc. Pap is finishing walks around house. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary went to Red Bud, to junk yard & she stop at Chris Buehlers; living out on farm now. Seen in paper that Mueth’s got $5,000 from auto accident that they had by Columbia, while back; they sued the guy that hit them & won, Ed got $2,000 & Phil $2500 & Bertha $200 & Josie $300. Leo & family came this eve, horse is getting along fine. Eggs still 25 [cents].

Saturday, Oct. 15, 1938

Such nice weather. Chris Buehler moving from Red Bud to his farm north of town. Pap went to Smithton.

Monday, Oct. 10, 1938

Beautiful day washed ironed. Pap hauled 3 loads wheat to Waterloo got 60 [cents]. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were here this morn. accross [sic] street. We went to New Athens this afternoon, took 2 bus. potatoes we got 40 [cents] trade. made guess on [? – unclear] of Waalows, 25 45 & 15 some people guessed in millions; closes today the contest. Pap payed [sic] L. Matzenbacher for lime dust & hauling & [? – unclear] 15 ton & 60 lbs @ 1.45 – $45.27 that was here & out at Henrys.

Sunday, Oct. 9, 1938

Went to Red Bud; Mauer going around with book, taking collection for dining room suite for priest, pap gave $1. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came this afternoon she went to devotion & meeting he was here; then after when [sic – went] to Wustmark, Bill & Bert went also in eve. got dish playing bluey, A. Mary got 2 blankets & bread box playing Liz Boll won quilt, that was raffled out; nice crowd.

Friday, Oct. 7, 1938

Bert [Bertille] cleaned wood work in kitchen & painted chairs. Pap went to barber, then took chev. to Red Bud, got it fixed, have the bumbers [sic] & defroster fan put in all comes with the car, also the hook and chains. Uncle Fred & A. Mary were up this afternoon; working across the street.
