Friday, Nov. 24, 1939

Leo & family came making plans for building shed had dinner & supper here. Leo & pap went to Smithton. Leo bought new V8 Truck $500 & his old car, brought it along home. Henry brought load corn. Bert [Bertille] baked cookied. Mrs. Roland Nobbe – Mildred Wild died & was buried this week at Waterloo she had been sick for some time married just a year & Walter Nobbe fell on leaves on sidewalk at his home & fractured some bones, is confined to his home.

Saturday, Nov. 18, 1939

Uncle Fred’s 64 & Uncle Joe’s birthday. Rained last nite. Pap took load wheat to Waterloo got 81 [cents]. The Kunkel place was sold on Public Auction at Court House this morn. at 10 o clock by Morrison. Uncle Pete Reheis got it $1500. rather had to take it, he had the mortgage. Bill [Klein] came took Bert [Bertille] & pap along out to Henrys this eve.

Friday, Nov. 17, 1939

Marita was sick last nite, vomiting & fever, they took her to Dr. Pautler’s this morn; were here all day he [Leo] & papa went in wood, to make posts for corn crib floor, had dinner & supper here. We packed things belonging to Bert [Bertille]; cleaned out cupboards; man here wanted bread. Seen in paper Jerome Schilling & Elizabeth Shields getting married Thanksgiving Day with dance at Pautlers Hall. Archie Wihel have baby girl – makes 2 girls & 1 boy in family.

Wednesday, Nov. 15, 1939

Washed, ironed, cleaned basement, & things from butchering. Pap hauled 2 loads wheat to Waterloo – got top – 84 [cents], good wheat, it was starting to get hot; so he hauled Bill stopped, he was at Frank Birkners was fixing pump. Mrs. Mertz was around enrolling people for Red Cross, gave her a donation of $1.00 for that purpose. Went out to Uncle Freds celebrating his birthday, Orlet family & Bill were all there for chicken supper, played cards had cake & wine; had enjoyable evening.

Sunday, Nov. 12, 1939

Went to mass. Arelia [? – unclear] Pours 31 yr. birthday today. Tipton parish is having a wurstmarkt at Donahues this afternoon & evening. Uncle Fred & pap went over awhile. A. [Aunt] Mary went to church & meeting. Bert [Bertille] went to see Renneckers; they had supper here. Bill & Bert went to his mothers, her birthday; Booby & his girlfriend were also there, we popped corn, had grape juice, pie etc; played cards, pinochle & euchre.

Wednesday, Nov. 8, 1939

Washed, ironed. Eichenseer boys hauled in 2 loads coal. Pap went out on business trip this afternoon. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came went to euchre in School Hall given by the Holy Name Society. Bill [Klein] & Bert [Bertille] went to Paderborn euchre there, & also Millsdadt [sic] has a card party tonite, all in same nite. Cortner boys bought a new V-8 traded in 1937 chev.

Tuesday, Nov. 7, 1939

Went to Belleville, sold everything. Eggs 30 [cents]. Had piece bacon & sausage left, turnips also. Leo & family had supper here. Bert [Bertille] went to Belleville with them. A Bruehl man near Belleville close to Ross Filling station killed his daughter & wife last nite, he is in jail; Another man was robbed & killed near a store; on Ill. Street. Wittenauer shocked load corn, took it home, & brought one here also. Papa & Marita went to election; in Firemens Hall; County Election. Schmidt won against Jost for Judge. Altes Co. Commissioner. Bill [Klein] came got Bert [Bertille] took Woody Acker to Belleville; also his girlfriend on business.

Thursday, Nov. 2, 1939

Went to 8 o clock mass, only one in Red Bud. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came pap went along with him to Waterloo on business for him. We cooked soap; cleaned smoke house, sharpened butcher knifes; baked cookies & cake. Pretty cold this eve.

Monday, Oct. 30, 1939

Rained last nite & getting colder; with light to heavy frost, radio says for tonite. Bert [Bertille] washed ironed patched, washed feathers. Pap hauled 2 loads wood with truck. Miller of Columbia here this afternoon, looking for farm. Totschs had free dance last nite had opening of new hall, made part of store into dance hall for winter months hall to cold.

Saturday, Oct. 28, 1939

Pap went to meeting & signed up at Kammlers this morn. this afternoon went to Waterloo church, got Berts shoes heels repaired; stopped at Henry’s both ways & still never seen the baby awake yet always sleeping. Leona is up & Mrs. Senior [Geoddel?] is going home today, they butchered a little one today. Mr Cleveland was there helping to butcher, also made sausage.
