Bert [Bertille] baked cookies etc. Pap is finishing walks around house. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary went to Red Bud, to junk yard & she stop at Chris Buehlers; living out on farm now. Seen in paper that Mueth’s got $5,000 from auto accident that they had by Columbia, while back; they sued the guy that hit them & won, Ed got $2,000 & Phil $2500 & Bertha $200 & Josie $300. Leo & family came this eve, horse is getting along fine. Eggs still 25 [cents].

Thursday, Oct. 20, 1938

Bert [Bertille] went out to Henry’s helped her [Leona] house clean, 2 rooms. Henry & Billy [Willis] brought load corn up here. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were here, she went up to school house for meeting, making plans for centennial mass to be. Kenneth Kemp was here, looking for Emil. He isn’t at home tonite.

Wednesday, Oct. 19, 1938

Rain & colder this morn. Bert [Bertille] took all the flowers out, put them in basement. Lena Meng was here awhile, stopped in on way home from town. Last nite was Wustmarket at Memorial Hall in Waterloo given by Catholics; also entertainment paper said. Leo & family came, he has sick colt, the one from us, he called Doc. Miller of Waterloo from here, he came here, & we all went to Leo’s, has swollen leg, both front ones; gave him stuff to rub on them, has an awful lot of pain, can’t lie down.

Tuesday, Oct. 18, 1938

Nice weather. Bert [Bertille] cut lawn, for last time. Cleaned basement this afternoon. Raining this evening.

Monday, Oct. 17, 1938

Nice day. Bert [Bertille] washed, ironed. We hauled 2 loads oats, all of it from out at Henry’s, this afternoon. They were at Belleville today. Eggs still 25 [cents] good price.

Sunday, Oct. 16, 1938

Went to Paderborn, church then went to Leo’s for dinner & supper; Bill [Klein] came over & him & Bert [Bertille] went to afternoon devotions; in eve. went to Totsch’s free dance & fish fry. Jake Neff got eggs here this eve. for themselves.

Such nice weather. Chris Buehler moving from Red Bud to his farm north of town. Pap went to Smithton.

Friday, Oct. 14, 1938

We went to funeral of Mr. Frisch 80 yrs. old, Fr. Aydt made a very good sermon; pretty large, funeral, Garedener. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & Bert [Bertille] went to Belleville this afternoon. Olive Laut came this eve. paid ground rent $8.00 there truck patch.

Thursday, Oct. 13, 1938

Beautiful rain last nite, settled dust for awhile. Rob. Payne democratic candidate for clerk was here this eve. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped, went to Red Bud. Harry Wittenauer’s finished sewing wheat here today. Henry & family were up, he got some more wheat to sew; Listened to Major Bowes on radio.

Wednesday, Oct. 12, 1938

Columbus Day. We wormed our pullets this morn. John Frish – Gus dad was found in chair, pulling potatoes & died was found that way when Gus came home last nite. Bert [Bertille] made some more Mince Meat. Besse of Millsdadt [sic] bought 4 bu. & 20 lbs. potatoes & 75 [cents] hundred. $1.96.
