Papa went up town this morning.  Rosalia was up at Mamie Eichenseers this afternoon and got one of her dress patterns.  She brought our umbrella along back.  They got it fixed up now.  The men are going to work in the quarry again today.  Fr. Grootens called on Uncle Fred to come to the new school and work today.  He was afraid it was going to rain so Rosalia went out there and brought them along back.  Then Uncle Fred and Papa went to work at the school all day.  Henry & family came up this afternoon.  Henry & Leona went to Belleville and the kids stayed here.  Aunt Mary & Bobby carried lunch up to the men working, to Uncle Fred and Papa.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary had dinner, supper & breakfast with us.  Clarence Wagner was down a little while this evening or this afternoon playing with Bobby.  This evening Mamie, Angela Eichenseer & Mrs. Joe Wachtel came here to get us.  Then we all went up to Kammler’s Hall and celebrated Odillo Eichenseer’s birthday.  There were quite a few people there – Gus Blackburn, Uncle Fred, Karl Boll, Hy. Rausch & Ralph Rausch furnished the music.  Gus Blackburn charged $3.00.  They had 8 cakes baked.  We sure had a good time!  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stayed all night at our house.  There is going to be a dance at Rapp’s next Wed., but we got no invitation.

Grootens wanted Papa to come and help on the new school today, but I told him he was too busy.  He had to set posts for a straw shed.  So then he called for Adam Brand but I don’t think he answered.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were there this evening.  Uncle Fred helped Papa put the posts on.  Papa went up town this evening.  Albert Griffin a student at the University of Illinois graduated and can be anything he wants to in the case of law or anything else.  Irene Reheis also graduated from Belleville High School.

Saturday, June 14, 1930

Today is Flag day but I didn’t see very many flags floating.  Leona called this morning and wanted to know if one of us could come out there today and watch the kids, her and Henry was going to cultivate corn.  So Papa & Rosalia went out.  Papa went to Waterloo & Rosalia stayed there, she had dinner there.  Papa came home for dinner.  After dinner, Papa went to New Athens & Freeburg on business.  We have an invitation from Mrs. Cleveland to go to Weber’s barn dance, it is Mrs. Weber’s birthday.  I don’t know if we will go yet or not.  I seen posters today for Harry Kammlers dance next Saturday, the 28 of June.  I noticed in todays Belleville News Democrat that Edward Neff from 19 North Church Street was in the hospital undergoing medical attention.  And also that Miss Ester Ida Dalkert had her name analysis.  She is from Waterloo, Ill.  Miss Irene Roth analyzed it for her.  Good many people are cutting wheat already.  Steve Rennecker went out shocking for Jake Klein.  Henry & family came up this evening & brought Rosalia along back with them,  they didn’t get off of the machine because they wanted to go to Waterloo to get their machine, they had theirs in there getting it fixed up in running condition.  We stayed at home this evening.  George Wagner & Bernice, Charles, Melvin were over here this evening a little while.  He came to get a spring chicken for Sunday.  We sold him one for .75¢ a piece.  He took 1.  Afterwards Papa went along with him to see his barn.  Ralph Rausch took a motor cycle ride this evening.  The motor cop is on the road now.  I think he was on Saturday anyway.

Papa went out to Henry’s this morning & got the team & then hauled posts.  He brought the little colt along up to Hecker too.  Afterwards he went over to Ed Meng’s a little while, then went back out to Henry’s again.  Mr. John Armbruster & son Raymond were here this morning & looked at our leghorns chicks that we have for sale, but he heard that we just wanted to sell the pullets.  So he said he would talk to his wife about it first and would let us know later.  Yesterday was Uncle Pete & Aunt Lizzie Reheis wedding anniversary.  They are married 36 years.  Last Sunday the Hecker baseball team played up & with Floraville & Hecker won.  Rosalia got the mail & took 2 doz. eggs to the store, got .18¢ a dozen.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary went to Red Bud this afternoon a little while they stopped in when they went both ways.  Mr. Jake Helfrich & another fellow from Belleville were here this evening.  They each bought 2 spring chickens for .80¢ a piece.  Papa went up to work at the school from about 4:30 to until 6 o’clock.

Mr. Hill called up this evening and said there was a little chick over there that didn’t belong to them & we should come over & see it, maybe it was ours.  So Bertille went over & brought it along back, but it didn’t belong to us.

Thursday, June 12, 1930

Papa went up to Jake Neff’s this morning and when he got there Ed was still in bed yet so after awhile Ed came down here & him & Papa went out to Henry’s & got his team & went up in the woods to haul posts.  They came back at dinner time.  Ed was here for dinner.  Papa went out in the woods this afternoon again.  Rosalia planted some beet seed, radish & beans this morning after the rain.  We washed & ironed, patched today.  There were 3 fellows here this morning that goes around demonstrating washing machines, the Maytag’s. They wanted to see Papa, but he was out at Henry’s or rather up in the woods.  This afternoon there was a man by the name of Herzog from Belleville here.  He wanted to fix up landscaping.  But we didn’t want to do it, so he left.  This evening those washing machine men came here again & then Papa was at home.  The Misses Lela & Ethel Denker & Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were here this evening.

It is raining this morning but we sure need it to.  Everything is so dry, the garden is just like dying, from heat and no rain.  It rained almost all day & nite.  Henry & family were over at Uncle Fred’s this afternoon and got some tomato plants to plant out this evening.  They came here when they came back but they didn’t get out of the car.  Papa was up town twice today.  George Wagner & Werner Kammler were here this evening and looked at our little leghorns.  Werner would like to buy some, he is going to let us know by tomorrow morning.  Louis Millman was also here & looked at them.  Today Pete Birkner fixed Steve Rennecker’s chimney for him.  Papa asked a few this morning up town if they know of any one wanted to buy leghorn chicks.  Bertille baked bread, coffee cake, cookies, today.  Rosalia worked in the garden and also planted some flowers out and sowed some lettuce seed in the garden after the rain, so tonight we have some more showers and then it will start to grow.
